Default Rattle

Hi all

I have a rattle from the front off-side wheel area, noticeable when turning and going over pot holes. Im going to whip the wheel off once there is a dry spell, where should I start looking?

I would check the drop links first.

Jim

Is it obvious when these drop links are knackered?

I had mine off when I did my shockies and they seemed OK but I have a clonk when turning right down a small driveway kerb first thing in the morning.

It sounds like something settling/ clunking into position- its not the shockie top mounts they are fine.

Yes. When the drop links are past it the joints at the top and bottom show little or no resistance.

Thanks Jim, can I check these with the wheels on, or is it an up in the air job?

What am I looking for exactly?

You need to jack the car up and remove the wheels. To check the drop links the best way is to remove them. My advice would be to apply release oil the weekend before on the threads. Then just unbolt and check the movement of the joints. If the joints are slack they need replaced. I replaced mine when I did the front discs at about 53,000 miles and the drop links were worn but not rattling yet.

Jim

I just jacked the drivers side up, not removed the wheel yet, but I could only just twist the drop link, its still quite stiff. ill perhaps have another look and remove them.

They are not expensive to replace and its a straight forward job to do. I bought mine in one of the local motor factors.
Best of luck

Just did a bit more investigation...

The from big wishbone bush on the drivers side is covered in oil, Im guessing this is contributing to the problem. I've already had these done once under warranty, about 30K ago, and the car only has 54K on it. Time to fit the Powerflex ones me thinks?

My s60 has done 56,000 miles and still on the original bushes. I replaced them on my V70 at about 77,000 miles. Your bushes could be causing odd sounds from the suspension.
