Mine had had the same - main dealer for a couple of years, then a Volvo/Saab independent from then on, hence it missed the "free" upgrade... I always go onto a manufacturer's website when I buy a used car to check whether recalls have been done, however, because this was a service update not a recall, it had gone off the website when it no longer became a free update... It was then, of course, impossible to find out that it hadn't been done!

The old tensioner had a number of failures, I seem to remember, so was changed to a more reliable design. I don't really understand why it was different from the D5 tensioner in the first place... I did eventually manage to find a Chinese made original pattern tensioner still available, however they lost me at "Chinese made"...

I did wonder if I could just fit a new "old-type" tensioner, and like you I'll pass on that.

We're driving to Switzerland on Saturday and have no time to sort this out, so will have to wait till we come back.

The drilling and tapping of a new hole; is it making the original hole a tad bigger, or is it a different location on the block?

I'm still kicking myself for not realising the service book stamps were not from Volvo

I kicked myself the same as you, then realised it wouldn't change anything, so got on with getting it done.

I think they drill and tap a new hole where there was none before. I thought one new hole, but as there are 4 new bolts listed, perhaps there are 4 new holes? Can't say I looked into the detail.

Definitely worth approaching your nearby dealers and seeing if any will give you a discount - after all it wasn't your fault that it wasn't done. And perhaps mention it to the person you bought it off? Worth a try...

No worries, will get this sorted after we get back from the road trip. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!

OK so just had a good mingle with Volvo dealership, they haven't done this in a while! They quoted £420. I was planning to do the timing and A/C belts myself but I'll probably just get them to do all the belts since they're gonna be in there anyway. If I'd known this I would have asked for a bigger discount when buying the car

All done at the Volvo dealership for £418, and they washed the car too.

Now onto the timing belt...

You mean they haven't done the timing belt. Don't forget the 12 months free road assistance. Or it that only with the service.
