Default Which petrol?

Just an idle question on which petrol people put in their cars.
Also what is the difference between branded petrol and supermarket stuff?

97 RON is what volvo recommend for your T5, so feed her with super unleaded!

I personally use Shell Optimax, which at 98.5 is the highest octane fuel available.

If you do a search for 'which fuel' there was a lengthy discussion on the pros and cons of the various octanes a couple of months ago.

I'm sure there are others who will disagree, but in my opinion for a T5 super or optimax is what you should fill up with.

I use super unleaded too - the nearest Shell station is too far away to be practical.

However, I don't believe it makes a bit of difference from when I used ordinary unleaded; I continue because I'm an idiot, I suppose.

Regarding supermarket fuel versus branded, if the octane rating is the same, so is the fuel to all intents and purposes; the only time I've ever known it to make a difference is that (Shell I believe) fuel that had a gel-like additive that occasionally wrecked engines when it wasn't properly dissolved - this stuff was the only fuel that didn't cause problems in an Alfa Romeo Cloverleaf at 40.

The whole thing about 'supermarket' petrol being of inferior quality was a red herring propagated by:

a) the major fuel companies (even though they sell their fuel to the supermarkets direct)

b) by Ford and Vauxhall to try & avoid warranty claims on their then-new Zetec and Ecotec engines, when they were introduced in the early 90s. Both claimed that supermarket fuel "carboned up" the valves -- this was subsequently proven to be nonsense, and was in fact due to poor initial design. Both manufacturers eventually (and quietly) decided to put these failures under "goodwill" warranty work and dropped criticism of supermarket petrol. This happened with my dad's '93 Zetec Escort after a lengthy dispute with the dealer and Ford customer care.

Simply use whatever fuel is recommended for your car: if it's a turbo it will benefit a little from super / Optimax. Also try and use a petrol station that is busy -- that way you get fresher fuel that's less likely to be contaminated.

As the usual suspect will know, My "Check Engine" light has been a costant source of anoyance. From week 2 I have used Optimax and the performace has been respectable as it did feel a little healthier on it.

My only cautionary note is that I once got caught on the M1 with no optimax available so I filled up with Esso Regular. Now heres the rub. After about 100 miles the Check engine light went out.

I thought great!! and went and filled up with Optimax, not realising the conection. **ck Me if the light didn;t come back on in 10 miles! When I figured it might be fuel I tried it again and sure enough it went out for a hundred or so miles then I must confess it came back. all this set agaist a code of 2-3-2 wich is weak mixture, ie too much air (oxegen) in the mixture. I thought I had an air leak and paid £80 for a new inlet gasket! So to my mind I need to get the mixture right at the pump not the EFI so the ECU is happy. I'm working on Cocktails of one tank optimax to 2-4 tanks regular. but also trying to avoid BP cos I tried their Super plus unleaded to get to the desire 97 ron only to see the B***ard light come back on!

Any clues on sorting this in a more othadox fashion??

Just had 150 "Check Light" free miles from the beast. then for no apparent reason it pops back on again.. gonna try topping the half full tank up with esso or bp regular and see if the giga counter stops clicking...

More in a bit x(
