RE: Oil & Filter
As far as I am aware yes, my dad has always told me that you can mix semi and mineral, but to go to fully synth you need to know what was in there and flush the old stuff - BUT as engines get older flushes are less of a good idea - some of the cr*p in the engine stops leakes and damage, and flushing can 'cause' lots of damage to appear. Not sure how much this applies to the latest engines, but he has been doing the job a while (35 yrs) and will not do it to his own cars. Comments guys?
BTW Modern Kwaki parralel twins are quite good too (they show up 911 turbos to about 100mph hehehehehehe }> ) Stu |

RE: Oil & Filter
Hi,
I'm in for the first time and looking through the posts with some interest. Some really useful discussions going on. Just had my T5 serviced by volvo (18k miles) and noticed that they have used semi-synthetic. The first service at 6k used fully synthetic. Like most of you I always thought that full syn was the order of the day for turbo and other hi performance engines - certainly I would not consider anything else in my bike. So after checking the user manual and seeing their recomendation to use fully syn, I became a little concerned. So contacted Volvo by e-mail first and also back to the dealer. Both are now saying that semi is OK. Apparently this change of heart is recent. Would have been nice to be told beforehand! I thought people may like to know so here is the volvo reply: 'As long as the oil meets ACEA A2/A3 grade, either may be used. We do not recommend the use of oil additives unless specifically recommended by a Volvo Authorised dealer. Our recommendations are for normal use, if you intend to use your car in extreme driving conditions that produce abnormally high oil temperatures or oil consumption, such as driving in mountainous terrain with a great deal of engine braking or high-speed motorway driving oil grade ACEA A3 is recommended.' Does this concern anyone else, or is it just me? Also I don't actually know what ACAE A2/A3 is although I guess they are semi and fully synthetic respectively. Enlightenment please? John C V70 T5 |

RE: Oil & Filter
Slightly 'off topic' but I've just had Mobil 1 put in my R by a local tyre place for £34.
That was 5.3L (big bottle and little bottle) of oil and a filter plus a bloke to get his hands dirty for less than the cost of 4L of Mobil 1 from Halfords. Fantastic :7 |
