Definitely was at the scrappers not so long ago selling for £1000.

Might have been an easy fix to get it back on the road but does seem a red flag.

I'm in the wrong business obviously

Wow, mind blown. I was a hair away from buying this thing. I even paid holding deposit (the dude doesn't want to return it, which is another story - I'll be reporting him to the ombudsman). Glad I double checked everything on this forum, you're priceless!

Unfortunately, bank transfer. I paid £100. I researched this and it looks like I'm able to pull out as long as the purchase was done remotely without me seeing the car prior. So the guy should just pay back. He also mentioned on the phone he'd be paying back if I'm not happy with the car. Now he's insisting he will pay back only if he manages to sell in 10 days, which I'm pretty sure he just pulled out of his own arse. I paid the deposit on Weds last week and let him know I wanted to pull out less than 24 hours later. Very different experience from any reputable car seller. I did this with ArnoldClark on more than one occasion and they always paid back. This dude is a scam artist. Making a court claim and reporting him to the ombudsman at this point.

Might be worth dropping autotrader an email as well, you never know they might pull his adverts or at least warn him

That sounds way premature - Ombudsman will be uninterested, and a claim's a faff, and they will want to know what you've done to resolve.

Send a firm email, requiring repayment without strings by x date. If (when) nothing, then local Trading Standards and Autotrader next steps, I'd suggest.
