Help! Destroyed my clutch and gearbox?
Hiya lads.
I drive a VOLVO S40 SE, 2005. Tonight I was driving, accidentally shifted into 1st from 5th as I was decelerating into a roundabout. Car jolted and there was a loud bang sound. I was then unable to get my car into gear and had to be towed home by my parents. Not quite sure what kind of damage I've caused, and any insight into how expensive or how difficult it would be to solve myself would be highly appreciated. Thanks x |

Oh dear, I think your title sums up the damage.
Probably looking at a box rebuild at the minimum and potentially a clutch, depends what other damage was cause as the engine would have taken a pretty serious jolt. Might be easier to strip a box off eBay if there's one available.

Years ago I once deliberately down-changed to second gear from high speed in our hateful Ford Onion and instantly wrecked the gearbox and lost drive, I never did find out from the guy who took it away for drink-monies what was wrong.
I'm guessing the huge increase in gear speed to 'catch up' with the cars actual speed is enough to destroy bearings/gear wheels etc. In this case I guess a replacement good known g/box will be needed, be worth getting it checked over or speak to a g/box specialist and describe exactly what happened - they'll have seen it all before no doubt.

I repaired a car once for someone who did this (Rover 214 1991) it was a straight forward repair - the splined boss that sits in the middle of the clutch plate had become detached and was just spinning in it.
It probably needs to be stripped down to diagnose.
