Default 2010 C30 2.0D Remap / Tuning Chip query.

Hi there, first of all I'm new to the site and would like to say hi to everybody!

I've just purchased a 2010 C30 2.0D R-Design (136 PS model) and have only had it for a total sum of 1 and a half weeks! I'm loving it so far; I think it's a great looking number, has a cracking interior and is excellent at cruising. I've bought a few little mods for it already, replacing the OEM paper filter with an aftermarket foam one, as well as placing a tidy looking Polestar bage on the back!

My last car was an 06 Ford Focus ST-3 which was fantastic, with lots of power, a great sound, but heavy on the fuel. I think this C30 is a better all rounder, but I do miss the power and noise of the ST. I had to change due to the extra mileage I'm now doing, but I'm not regretting the choice!

However, I'd like to up the power if possible (and any extra MPG would be a bonus too!), and was wondering what the best options are for tuning? I was thinking of going down the road of either getting a Chip Box or Remap. Can anybody advise of the best option to take? I'm located in Portsmouth, but frequent South Wales often, so any tuning firms in either vicinity is of interest to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Billy.

Hi Billy,

The main players for a remap are:

MTE - from Don @ Kalmar Union
Shark - from Ben/Mikko @ Shark Performance

There is BSR, RICA and others but if you've played with your focus at all you'll know you get what you pay for.

I'd definitely recommend giving those above a call, if you wanted Shark can also do EGR delete and DPF delete too thus giving you even more horses and if driving sensibly even more MPG.

Remap definitely, our V50 was so much better afterwards and fuel economy went up slightly.

Wouldn't recommend getting a DPF delete as its a potential MOT failure the rules say a reason for rejection is "A catalytic converter or particulate filter missing where one was fitted as standard."

Plus it's been put there for a reason, i.e. to clean up the dirty exhaust fumes of all the NOx, SOx and all the other nasty stuff diesels emit.

I'd certainly call Ben at Shark. There are a few guys on the site I mod for that have had their 2.0D tuned by Shark and are very impressed with the results.

Either way, whoever you go for you'll be looking at around 170bhp and a lot more fun from an already good block. I use to have the 2.0D before my D5 and really enjoyed my time with it.

I would recommend the product from Shark, but not the aftercare. I am still awaiting a return of my deposit for the scanner device.

Totally unacceptable.

Thanks for your replies guys, some really useful advise.

I phoned my insurer (Co-Op today) to ask if my premium would increase if I was to Remap my car, only to be informed that they don't cover mods! Boo! I thought I'd be honest and let them know, but they shot me down!

Thing is, the insurance is decent considering I'm 25 and do 10,000 miles a year (only £362 for the year). The closest competitor is Elephant at £504 a year! So I'm saving quite a bit there.

Elephant do cover mods however at a marginal increase over the £504 pa they quote for a standard vehicle.

Co-Op would charge me a £50 fee for cancelling my cover if I was to go ahead and change Insurers, so I don't know if I can justify paying £142+ (and the additional £50 fee) to change to Elephant for the sake of a Remap.

What a dilema! Ha ha!

Then again, the car does still drive really well and I feel like it's quicker than the suggested manufacturer's figures as it is, so maybe I should wait until the costs come down a little, or change insurers at a later date. Mmmm, decisions!

Bill.

When you say EGR delete, blocking the pipe work off and would they remove the error message from the dash?

I looking into this some time ago and when I put the blanking plate in I got an error message on the dash.

@geoffco: The "CR Tech" which I believe is their most basic box.

Decided for that one since I'm steadily approaching 100k miles, so didn't want to risk it with higher outputs, and mine is a EURO III 2.0D without a DPF so didn't need a box "designed to work in harmony with your DPF" as the manufacturer claims the others, more expensive ones do.
