05 s40 2.0d no boost
I lost all boost the other day on a long journey. I stopped and started the engine again (as this worked once before) but still no improvement. There is no smoke and I fitted a brand new turbo 1 year, and over 10000 miles, ago. I am getting no messages and I've checked under the bonnet for any loose hoses or broken wires etc. and can't see any issues. Looking online the tcv is mentioned quite a bit but can't see any clear issues with that. I'm supposed to go on holiday in it on Wednesday and I'd hate to have to go in my wife's purple gutless almera. Any iseas?

Update. I took it to a local garage last week and they did a check with a generic diagnostics machine. They only message it came up with was something about a low signal from the throttle sensor (this seems to tie in with the symptoms). The guy at the garage rang up someone he knows at a more specialised volvo garage and this guy said he didn't think that was the problem as he's never heard of any problems with them before. He said I need to go to his garage with a more specialised machine. This will cost me £75 just for the diagnostics. Has anyone else heard about any problems with the throttle sensor before? Like I said, it seems to make sense given that I'm only getting any response from the initial press of the accelerator. Pressing it further does nothing. I had a fiddle in the throttle body and it was moving fine. Any ideas?

Your car has 2 x TCV's (Turbo Control Valves) I'm guessing one of those has failed and causing your problems as a quick keyboard diagnosis but I would also check out all boost pipes, vacuum pipes intercooler and pipes too.

When you say no boost,is it revving but no boost or not revving past 2800?
Mine went into limp mode,no power and no revs past 2800 ish when I had throttle problems. It was a dirty connection on the CEM. Might not be that, but it's free to give them a clean! |

Update
Can't believe I've been living with this problem for so long. There is no boost most of the time. If i turn off the engine and start it again, I get boost for a short while but it isn't steady. It kind of pulses. I sometimes switch off and on again at traffic lights just so I can get a bit of boost to pull onto a motorway or duel carrigeway. I bought a new tcv but it made no difference. I swapped it round with each of the other two with no difference. I changed the egr valve as,that showed up on the diagnostics, but this made no difference. I would love to have this car back up to full power but it seems like I just have to put up with it being a really sluggish brute. For all the good things about this car, I have never had anywhere near as much trouble in diagnosing and/or fixing problems as I have with this car. Any advice would be much appreciated. I know there might be a few other threads on this topic but I feel like I've either tried everything mentioned or it's not relevant to my situation. |

Firstly, have you had a proper code read out through VIDA?
If there is a sensor problem that will 99% show you which one is giving you issues. A generic reader won't do the job as these are not generic codes, they're Volvo DTC's, so you'll need Volvo equipment to read them. Secondly, is your car going into limp mode? Does it go back to normal after a restart for a while? I've had this before on turbo charged cars and it was a faulty lambda sensor that was throwing the mix out and triggering the car to go into limp. May be worth checking the live data of those in VIDA if you have access to it.

Hi
I would be very tempted to check all the vacuum pipes around the engine for splits, or looseness on the pipes they connect to. I had one come off next to the oil filter which gave similar problems. There are 2 pipes down next to the oil filter, worth checking. Could check with a vacuum gauge as well. Could the vanes on the turbo be sticking. Not sure but might be able to test them with Vida Dice, someone else might know. Iain Last edited by IainG; Mar 13th, 2018 at 16:08. |
