Yes it was a 12gb and it has lasted me ok but then again I am not a heavy user .I have used it to connect my tablet to the internet and it is easy to do . I have not used all 12gb of it but to me the price I paid for the 1 which is expiring was so cheap in comparison to other sims and also it is for 12 months and not just 30 days is really useful because I make more use of it when I go away with the caravan. Also being 4G it is fast too. I would not top it up as it is cheaper to by a new card. I have used it each time to update my maps but I only tend to update the ones covering UK ,France etc as I have no intention of going to East European countries.

I believe only cars with VOC have the sim card holder, but you can get round that by getting a mifi device, I have the sim holder but also have a Huawei mifi device and use that as I can then easily take it out of the car to use in caravan. If you get one make sure its open to any network.
Something like this.

I have the same as the standard sim fits both the car and my MiFi machine. It is a lot easier to fit the sim in the XC90 than the V90 because of where the holder is situated. My card is on its way so will save it till nearer the time I am off to France in June. I have the Huawei 5577 with the screen but I paid a good price (discounted) and you can get a plug in aerial system to get a better signal with this model.

Intrigued as to why everyone puts in 3G sims? I've got my 4G iPhone sharing it's connection by bluetooth to the car. My phone plan has 20GB of data, of which I usually use about 2-3 GB per month (including all the car stuff). It auto-connects each time I start

The 3 sim is 4g if used in a mifi and newer cars, older cars are 3g, but honestly can you tell, most internet companies cant even get 2gb at full signal strength, it is ~ £25 for 12gb that will last upto 12 months, so you would get 6 months using your 2gb a month, how much are you paying for 20gb every month to use 2gb. The 3 data I find to be just as good as my home wifi speeds and I am on a high speed virgin media deal. I also get better coverage than my phone signal.

The point is I’m paying for my phone sim anyway. I’m paying about £20 a month for my contract, including all my calls etc. Most contracts these days have pretty huge data allowances, and if you’re on WiFi most of the time at Home or in the office, then the data doesn’t get used.

If you’ve got it, why pay again for a SIM card in the car to give you data, when you can just make use of your phone you’re already paying for?

Mine updates maps, apps, etc. Granted I don’t use Spotify but I do use the Amazon Music App on my phone, and iPlayer Radio etc.

The card in question is 4G: 3 PAYG 4G Trio Data SIM Pack with 12GB Data

As to why use the car's SIM, rather than a tethered phone. This has been discussed in a number of past threads. Many do the same as you with no issues.

When I got the car a year ago I (like many others before and after me) asked the question: Why will I need to pay for another SIM, surely I can use the phone? I have a 4G phone also with 20GB a month

Personally I found that the car/phone would not always tether correctly. I tried via WiFi and Bluetooth. I tried standard features of the phone, and using task automation apps like MacroDroid, ITTT, Automator, ... Nothing (for me) was guaranteed. Most of the time it worked, but occasionally I would get 100yrds down the road, have to pull over, turn the engine off (to stay legal), and sort the connection out, then drive off. Just enough times to make it annoying

I also tend to keep the phone in the cup-holder or central console "bin", and I find the signal is very poor there. I know others have said that they find it fine, so maybe it is my phone. But that's what I experience with my phone, in my car.

Even though I have the older 3G modem (at least I believe I do, based on the speeds I found I was getting), I find it easier, more convenient. more consistent, and I get a better signal to use cars modem with a Three Data SIM, as opposed to my phone.

So those are my reasons. Others, I know, have different experiences

I do the same with my 4G Android phone. My car has a 3G modem and I tried a 3 SIM in it but it was noticeably inferior to 4G via my phone. I think it was mostly down to the 3 signal being pretty rubbish around here while Voda's 4G is very good. The car and the phone automatically tether via Bluetooth 100% of the time.

For £21 per month my plan gives me 25GB of data per month plus unlimited voice and texts. In addition the plan gives me Spotify Premium (which I use a lot in the car) for 'free' which would be £10 per month otherwise.
