Default New XC90 - a couple of questions.....

Dear all,

I have had my new XC90 for about 10 days or so and have pretty much got used to it. My last two cars were VW Touaregs and I think the XC90 is a step up certainly in terms of toys!

My spec is a D5 R-Design Pro with Xenium pack and smartphone integration.

I do have a couple of questions though.

1) Does anyone know how to make the Speed Sign Assist function work? It doesn't seem to do anything for me and is also poorly documented. I was expecting it to reduce speed when the vehicle is in Pilot Assist or Adaptive Cruise modes and it sees a lower speed limit sign. Road Sign Information is on and signs are correctly displayed in the HUD - but it doesn't seem to reduce speed on going from (for example) national speed limit to 40mph.

2) Does anyone know what the little "rounded squares" icon at the top centre of the instrument cluster means? I can't find this anywhere in the manual either. It is slightly animated and looks like, two little grey rounded off squares sitting almost on top of each other. All the other icons like main beam, parking brake, lane assist etc... are self explanatory, but I want to know what this one means!

3) Rain sensor for the windscreen wipers. Having a separate button for this is annoying. Is there any way just to set this as default rather than having to press the button every time it rains? OK - it's not a major gripe, but nonetheless.....

4) UK Map updates......does anyone know what the latest is? My car keeps telling me that updates are available in the download centre, but when I go there there is nothing obvious. I presume it is probably that there are maps for other countries available that need to be installed, but it won't do this over the modem.

5) Does anyone know how to make the HUD show anything more than speed, road signs and nav (if enabled?) I seem to recall when I test drove XC90s that one had an RPM gauge showing in Dynamic mode. Or is that just a petrol engine this that's not available on diesel?

Other than those points, I am really enjoying the car. I was worried that the 2L 4pot engine wouldn't enough after driving 3L 6 pot diesels for the last 12+ year, but it seems to to a good enough job.

The air suspension is excellent - this was another worry due to the 22" wheels on the Pro spec, but it handles even rough roads very nicely.

The front seats are great. I would have gone for the massage option, but couldn't make the budget work. Same for the B&W sound system - I would have loved to have this but again....budget. Still, the stock system does the job well enough.

The crowning glory though is the boot space. I have the 3rd row folded down and will probably almost never use it, and in this configuration it is an absolute palace for my 2 Deerhounds. This was the main reason I bought the XC90.

Regarding the maps you download them at home onto a 64gb usb stick and load them into the car for free , updated every 6 weeks or so .

full Europe file is about 48 gb takes about 50 mins to load into the car and possibly a lot longer to download from the website ..

Thanks for that. Thought it was probably the case and I guess I will need to go buy a 64G USB stick.

I am lucky....despite living in the middle of nowhere I do have fibre direct to the house so a 50G download will take less than an hour! :-)

Regarding your point #1, check:

Activating/deactivating the automatic speed limiter

For point #3,

Check the section titled "Activating/deactivating the memory function" at Activating/deactivating the rain sensor

With your own data SIM, you can download the smaller UK map via the cellular network. I use a Three data SIM in my car, and the car prompts me and downloads the UK map updates over the air, as they are tiny and normally around 150 to 200 MB.

I do have a 300 mile motorway run on Thursday, so maybe that will be better test conditions.

I presume that when the speed limit goes up, it doesn't up the speed (subject to max cruise speed setting of course) does it?

Anyway... will play with it more.

For point #5, you can choose what's displayed on the HUD, from a predefined list. See: Head-up display*

For Point #2, I believe you are referring to this: A dynamic symbol in the driver display

Pilot Assist and/or Adaptive Cruise Control use a maximum speed, set by you and adapts the speed of the car depending on the speed of the car in front of you. No car in front, it will travel at the set maximum speed. In these modes, the car will not slow from a higher speed, to a lower speed, depending on the speed limit.

The Automatic Speed limiter, once set will limit the car to the current speed limit, using the road signs, along the road.
