I may be wrong but I sense a confusion between the routine warning that the car is coming up to its mileage point where a service is recommended and a specific and very different warning that draws attention to a fault but is coy about admitting that there is anything wrong and so refers to the need for a service when what it means is that you should have something in the engine that is malfunctioning put right. The routine cancelling of a servicing period being due and the removal of a warning that there is something specific wrong with the engine should not be confused just because Volvo use the word "service" in both cases. They are not the same at all.
The guys in Volvo who worded the overfilled oil sump warning as a servicing issue could not get over the fact that they had the words "It's all my fault" running across their foreheads in neon lights and could not bring themselves to tell you that the sump was filling up with diesel fuel!

However, if there's a fault, a message pops up on the dash that says "Engine system service required". This isn't telling you that the car needs a service as in an oil change, its telling you that there's a fault with the engine. As you say, this message isn't to be confused with servicing (Oil change) because they aren't the same warnings.

I'm also getting the "Engine system service required" after a service. Not the 1st time this has happened. Usually the warning clears after a few days. However this time the car keeps going into limp mode. I returned back to non Volvo garage and they removed the oil and refilled with 200ml less and cleared the fault. After 20mins fault appears, limp mode and now engine management light as well. I have syphoned 500ml of oil out. Checked level by turning ignition on and turning the wheel on stalk to engine oil and it still shows max. Don't have Dice. Just a little concerned with driving the car like this. Thoughts please.

If you can't read the code or suck out some oil or drop the oil completely to put in the definite correct amount, anything else is a guess unfortunately.

Another D5 added to apparent overfill list, will get my mechanic to withdraw 300-500mls by Friday, do the reset then wait for it to disappear after X miles, touch wood!
Hope this YouTube of use. https://youtu.be/g5f4wXk7r_E

There is a very basic code reader built in to the car. Ignition on while holding the trip button. Will give you the basic fault number, iirc overfilled oil is 095. Could be wrong.
YouTube "drivelife" he's done a thing on it. |

With regards to the EML, you need diagnostics. Its guesswork otherwise because it literally could be anything that's causing the EML to come on. Did you buy the car from a garage? If you did, you could ask them if they'd look into it. I know its a long trip, but its a tad annoying for an EML to come on after just buying a car. They might not if it was sold on a "sold as seen" basis, but any reputable garage (if you did buy it in one) might help you out. Worth a try.
