Default ETM gone at 113,000 miles

Well, looks like my ETM has packed in. Wouldn't run yesterday morning when I went to work. It was running fine the night before, it came home from work (15 miles), stopped at the house, went to Asda and back half an hour later, still no issue.
First thing I did was check the plugs because I knew they were old and it appeared to be misfiring at tick over, which was slightly raised (1100 rpm)
One plug actually had a bit of insulator missing so I thought that was it. Nipped down to the local factor in limp home mode with the car lit up like a Christmas tree, and more messages in the DIM than I get on my phone. Replaced them there, no change. Limped home (only half a mile)
Anyway, I PM'ed my local hero with a Vida setup, who came across the Forth Road Bridge in the most atrocious conditions (take a bow Yosser!)
Vida showed some errors relating to the ETM, but nothing definite. It did show that the ETM had to be software upgraded to do the test on Vida.
Crucially, Vida showed no misfire problems on the coil packs or any other problem apart from the ETM. The misfire noise was from the way the car controls the tickover in reduced power mode by cutting the injectors giving a staccato effect. This info was from Vida!
I pulled the ETM and had a look, it had the white sticker and with Vida saying it needed updated, more or less confirms the problem!
It is now on its way to Spokoluzic of this parish who confirmed it did not need updated by Volvo before being treated to a new contactless TPS.
My local Volvo garage (15 miles away) wanted just over £100 to update the software with no guarantee it would work and to consider replacing the old white sticker one with a new unit for an eyewatering £500.
I promised Yosser I would update when my ETM comes back, so I will. It's always nice to see how it panned out.

Bad news from Spokoluzic. It's the actual circuit board that has gone, so not repairable.
He was most apologetic, even though it was not his fault, and is returning the part with refund. He also gave me a few suggestions to find a replacement. A Gentleman.

So, what price should a dealer charge for coding a secondhand unit to my car?

Found a 2001 White label ETM on Ebay. Let's hope this works!

It doesn't.
Local dealer does not want to upgrade software because it might corrupt the car???
I think he wants all my money.

Hello Stuart.

Here is a ECM fault finding flow chart.

I have a '99 S70 2.5 20v Non turbo with the ETS and MIL on. I got 3 fault codes, all pointing to a bad TCM - the throttle pot.

DTC's read:
P1043=ECM-9520 Accelerator pedal (AP) position sensor, Faulty signal
P1020=ECM-902B Throttle unit communication, Faulty signal
P1059=MIL requested by the throttle unit

In the meantime I spent 130 quid on a 2nd hand yellow label replacement throttle body. Didn't fix! Updated part number to the original white label part number.

Gonna look for a new throttle pot now So I have a supposedly good white label TCM for the inlet manifold.

In the meatime go to fleabay and search for a T69 OBD2 scanner. I bought one from www.beatthegarage.co.uk for 75 quid.

Cheers for that. I've got that very chart right here!
I'm leaning toward fitting a Proper new one or one of these

Hi so does that Vida tool actually tell you which ETM's require replacement or have been replaced? I have a yellow sticker and all the numbers off the sticker. Can you tell me if mine has been replaced?

Vida is a code reading tool, so it can tell you what is wrong. I think you will need the official Vida/Dice dealer setup to query the car history.

An update.
Went to local Volvo dealer (15 miles in a Rover 25 2.0D which broke it's week old clutch on the way back) - "I HATE CARS!"
Anyway - dealer wanted £357 for me to order new ETM. Ok, lets go for it. Turns out Volvo don't have new ones, and he's actually ordering a reconned one, which won't arrive until the 19th October, maybe.
I said OK but when I got home eventually (Bloody Cars!) I had a look online.
ECUtesting.com will do one for £310 all in with lifetime guarantee with delivery time of 2-3 days. Still have to get the cretins in Volvo to squirt the code though.
I've cancelled the one from Volvo.
I'm seriously thinking of going back to the 740/940 range...
