Exclamation Engine Requires Service?

Hello fellow Volvo owners/enthusiasts

I've just bought my first Volvo (cheap but prestigious!) an 02 S60 D5 With 135K miles. It was sold to me with the 'engine requires service' message (no dip or noticeable change in performance, other tale-tale signes of problems or warning lights). The dealer claimed it was just a standard service indicator (now I'm learning more!), however both the cruise control and air con aren't working. Now I'm guessing the cruise won't work if there is an engine management issue, but if the air con has gone (only warm air) I've seen suggestions of a weeping clutch issue? I have also read a few feeds on this message being caused by the 'Electronic Throttle module', would an 02 S60 have this or wasnt the ETM a pre 02 problem?

This is my first post and I would be great full of any advice.

The ETM problem is a petrol engine problem, so you should be ok there. :-)
Air con not working is probably because it is low on gas, nothing to do with cruise control. Cruise can be stopped by the clutch pedal sensor having brake fluid leaking on it causing issues with the system reading the input from the clutch sensor. This is usually cured by replacing the clutch pedal sensor and putting the new one in a plastic bag when fitting it because the leak from the brake fluid is infinitesimal.
The engine requires service may just be the message you get when it is time for a service, change of oil, filter etc.

1 Place the key into the S60's ignition.

2 Press down on the S60's odometer trip reset button and hold it there.

3 Turn the key to the "II" (accessories) position in the ignition.

4 Continue to hold the odometer trip reset button until the Service Engine Light begins flashing.

5 Release the odometer trip reset button and turn off the key in the ignition. Your service engine light should be reset to off. If it turns on again soon, your S60 might need service.
