What is this, and what does it do?

I dont' mean the engine, I mean the black box with the tubes coming off it in the middle of the picture.

The black box is the oil trap. For the PCV system.

Yes, I've been doing some reading about the PCV system. It's not something I've ever investigated before, but it turns out to be rather important.

On another thread on here, somebody was asking abotu cleaning them out. With the fortune of having two to play with, I took one apart to see how it works and it's nothing like as complicated as wikipedia made it sound. But, by The Gods, it's full of gunk! And soot.

Now, this gunk is very difficult to remove. Meths doesn't touch it, neither does white spirit, water is pointless, even petrol. But then, in a flash it came to me - caustic soda!

Cautic soda cleaned out this bad boy in no time, just like it was a blocked drain full of fat and grease. It took me about five goes of filling with the soda and warm water, but you should've seen the muck that came out. My wife had a fit when she saw the kitchen sink!

So there ya go, chaps. Save yourself a bit of money. Buy a bottle of caustic soda for a pound, but be careful if you get it into cuts on your fingers - it stings like hell. (rinse in cold running water)
