I don't think mine ran well with the MAF disconnected so it could still be that.
When my MAF went I had serious power loss and lots of smoke.

Mine threw a code though and even a check engine light I think. Disconnecting the MAF should definitely throw a code and check engine light and there are hardly ever no codes although to see the manufacturer specific codes it will still require either a snap-on reader or volvos own diagnostic gear.

Sounds exactly like the problem I had when my main air feed pipe blew off the turbo on my Saab big pipe from inter cooler

I would also tend to agree. Check the big hoses to and from the intercooler. For some odd reason they do tend to split at the bottom. Also check the big hose from the airbox to the turbo.

Yes John, those ones. In actual fact, check ALL the big air hoses.

Or, if you can manage to drive the car to mine, you can come over and I can try to see if I can find the problem. I can also read the codes with my DICE and also have every possible spare to try to troubleshoot

cheers gatos thats a really generous offer. i'll check the big pipes first.
i should be able to get to essex but embarrassingly slowly (8ish mph, less up hill). i'll let you know how i get on with the hoses and if i can't find a problem i'll come over at any time time thats convenient to you. thanks again its greatly appreciated.

8mph? Last time I was in London I'm not sure I got the opportunity to go that fast.
