Great news, thanks to Gatos' skills my car is now up and running. Turns out it was the electrics of the EGR. By a cunning process of elimation of various bits (MAF, MAP and N75) replacing known good for the same on mine. Code reader pointed the finger to EGR. Cleaned a replacement, popped it in and bingo the car is pulling better than ever.
So I've learnt a lot today passing tools, revving the engine and thoroughly enjoyed myself doing so. Brief recap of symptons. 1. Sudden loss of power 2. Very slow to build revs 3. Almost impossible to pull away or go up hill. 4. Smoke from exhaust. Cheers Gatos it was a pleasure meeting you, good coffee too.

Thanks for updating the post Vacu, so others will be able to see the solution to your problem in the future.
Just to add to the above, it was the actually EGR solenoid that had failed and the EGR was stuck in the open position, which would explain your symptoms. It was also great having you around and putting a face to a name. And it was also great having a person around who does not mind getting his hands dirty....

Oh, and forgot to answer your original question which was "Is this the end?".
The answer is "No"..... There is plenty more life left in your car

Alex I don't know what we would do without you sometimes mate youre a top bloke that's for sure the nearest on the s60 forum to you is Cheshired and dancake gives good advice also and I've had to make another toolkit for it almost because it has to use specialist tools for jobs unlike our conventional x40's. My s40 needs a 5k oil change over the weekend which I will do now I have a weekend off . Parked up having a rest at the moment.

I pity you, in that case I reckon you'll be seeing more of me. All joking apart, in the five years I've had the car this is by far the best pulling and accelerating I've had Note to self clean the EGR once a year.

I know what you mean about the tools and the S60. You will slowly slowly accrue the tools you need and it won't be a problem anymore. Quote:
Glad your car pull better now. It is amazing what such a stupid little part like the EGR can have such an effect to your car performance

A lot can be learned by being the oily rag in the company of an expert spannerer. If it wasn't for the resident cat our cars would not purr so well.
