Cool VVT Pylley / Solenoid

Okay. So i have this noise in the engine. Posts have told me to check the solenoid. This i have done. When i disconnect the solenoid the noise goes away. So i am told the problem is with the VVT pulley and i need to replace this. What i would like to know. What is wrong with the VVT pulley that is causing this noise and requires replacement? I got this car recently and the oil and air filters are brand new. The oil is sparkling new. Really clean. I am sure they did a service just before i bought the car. However, i have no way of knowing what oil they put in the car. Is it possible that the wrong grade of oil has been used. Would it not be viable to 1st flush the oil system and then replace the oil filter as well as then the oil with the correct oil.

Talking about flushing. On my older cars and bikes i have used i do is run the motor until normal operating temperature. Then I drain the oil.
I also remove the spark plugs.
Once this is done I then pour in about 5 liters of diesel and i swing the motor for a couple of minutes.
It does not start because the spark plugs have been removed and because there is no compression the resistance is minimal.

After doing this i drain the diesel.
Remove and replace the oil filter.
And then pour in the correct oil to the levels required. What do you thing? Can i do this on the Volvo V40 Estate?

You will find loads of literature on the VVT pulley on this forum and others. My take would be that if you don't have a check engine light on and you are not leaking any oil, let the sleeping dog lie. As for exactly why it is clicking, you'd have to take it apart and examine all the tiny oil passages for clues....bottom line, that VVT is an over-engineered, expensive nuisance. FYI: replacing it is basically a timing belt job + the cost of VVT.

You have opened up the oil discussion again, beware of the incoming tide!!! While that technique maaaaay work for bikes, I'm not sure what you would accomplish attempting this with a vehicle. Sounds like a waste of time. Get a good quality oil back in and change the oil more often if you like and leave it at that.

Disconnecting the VVT solenoid will normally cause the eml to illuminate, but if your VVT pulley/sprocket is badly worn it may also illuminate because the cam timing may be slightly out. Using a code reader may give you a better idea of why it's illuminating though ?
