Will this reader work on a 97 v40 (B4204s) and a 99 v40 (B4204t2) both autos if that makes any difference. Thankyou

Which reader?

The answer is no, OBDII or EOBD is for petrols from 2001 and diesels from 2004 onwards.

You would need a reader that can read non-obd codes.

I don't have a car of this age so hopefully someone will be along soon to tell you what they use!

I've used an Autocom reader to read codes on my 1998 V40 with the B4204S engine and it worked fine.

Bought this, does not work on a 2001 diesel V40. Is there anything like this one that would work?

Works on a diesel Clio 2004...

Only the genuine or clone Volvo gear seems to be any good for the diesels.

I have access to a nearly £300 scanner and whilst it'll talk to the air con unit it won't read the engine ECU! I can use OBDII/EOBD as mine is a 2004 year but it tells you barely anything.

Don't know what it is with the diesels but there isn't much other than the genuine gear that will read them. Apparently even the snap-on gear will only communicate it if you tell it its talking to a renault (didn't work on mine).
