Does the display and switch illumination not work too ? Thats the normal two things which dont work when the wrong radio is fitted , Dont go anywhere near a volvo workshop for software it could be expensive to fix ..

I've just joined the forum and this is my first post.

I'm an electronics engineer repairing TV's and Hi Fi's

What I would like to know is what happens to the modules that go wrong? are they binned by the dealer or are the returned to the manufacturer to be repaired, ie on an exchange basis.

If they are taken in exchange and repaired/refurbished then they must be returned to the blank position, ie unprogrammed.

Inside these modules is a chip called an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) now some of these EEPROM's are blank and load via the default software in the modules microprocessor and then loaded by the dealer with chassis info, others are pre-programmed by the manufacturer so you cant fit a blank one.

It is quite possible that if you locate and replace the EEPROM with a blank one, a dealer will be able to marry it to the car.

Is it going to be possible to convert the radio's to DAB for the digital switchover in 2015? Or will it be CD's only?

I'd like to fit a new Volvo radio that had DAB and had iPod connectivity but would that be possible in an 03 car?

Roy,
I believe the compulsory aspects of the digital radio switchover in 2015 have now been abandoned by the government. Whilst various providers will no doubt switch on a time frame of their own choosing it will now be a far more protracted proccess.

I hope so. Trouble is it is something the Government can make money from, so there is an incentive for them to progress with it.

It will be interesting to see their attitude once the TV switchover is complete next year.

Hi all. A very interesting (but slightly confusing thread) - I've recently acquired a 2001 V70 on a Y Plate. It seems the CD player is dead and, despite changing fuses etc, refuses to play. Everything else on the unit (HU-603?) seems to work (radio, tape deck) but the it refuses to recognise the CD function in its 'selection' display.

My simple question is: is it possible to simply swap mine for a second-hand replacement unit from another V70 and, if so, will there be complications regarding electronics, display etc?

The answer probably lies somewhere in this thread already but there seems to be a certain amount of conflicting info! Many thanks!

Thanks. But can I simply replace a whole HU-603 (Radio, Tape, CD unit) from another Volvo without any coding problems?

Asking for trouble, it may work for a while but if you connect to VIDA it will lock the whole car down and cost lots of money to fix.
