Unhappy Loss of power/stutters to halt Help

Hi everyone am new to the forum and i need your help !
I have a 98 s40 t4 which i've had for a few weeks now i went on a long trip in it over the weekend and ended up comming back on the back of an AA lorry, heres the problem , there was half a tank of petrol when i got it which i filled up before i left all was well until i got about 200 miles into my trip (fuel gauge showing just under quarter) and there was a sudden loss of power and no acceloration and stalled to a halt, after about 20 mins on the hard shoulder i started it up again and it ran as if nothing had happened until 7-10 miles down the road when it happened again, AA man couldn't find any fault and there were no warning lights on the dash, have had a look at it today and there are traces of oil in the throttle body pipe and a lot of oil by the turbo oil return pipe.
Any ideas ?
Please Help ! ! !

I'd bet my money on the fuel pump. There have been various posts with almost identicle symptoms to yours...do a search

Rather than waste your money having it diagnosed, bite the bullet and go straight to the dealer and buy a new pump (£200+) and fit it yourself. You could try cleaning your existing pump but being 10 old it'll probably be a temporary measure.

Or, you could contact Rufe on here as he's our resident main dealer and can do mail order & discount

How much oil? An oily residue would be normal around the breather pipes, just crankcase ventilation, but lots of flowing oil is not a good sign. The seal at the end of the turbo oil return is a normal failure and not a costly repair.

You may at some point need to carry out a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) clean out. Do a search for PCV in this forum for detailed procedures.

If you're planning to do the pump yourself don't forget to temporarily replace the plastic retainer/nut immediately after removing the old pump. It tends to shrink once off and makes it difficult to tighten when replacing the new pump. Again a detailed procedure is available somewhere on the forum.

Hope it goes well for you and let us know how you get on

A big flat screwdriver, a hammer and some balls to bash your car. Thats what i needed and the bugger took ages to get off. I did clean my filters around two years ago and the problem still hasn't came back, still original pump, 130k over 250 bhp, still going strong. Watch it go in the morning. haha

The tool will look something like this. Maybe you can bend a bit of flat bar and get a wrench on it...
