I wasn't aware Volvo ever made their own engines until recently. Everything i had in the past had either Renault or Audi units.

When buying the 2005 D5 the salesman ststed it was the first time Volvo had designed their own Diesel for a passanger car. He generaly knows his stuff so i took his word for it

He was talking about Diesel only. The 4 and 5 cylinder petrol engines used in all the "big" Volvos are Volvo through and through although I'm not sure about later V70s. The B23/B230 "redblock" used in 1/2/7/9 series are legendary. The 850 and earlier V70 Tdi use the Audi sourced unit (modified by Volvo) - damn good engine (I have one), maybe better than Volvo's own common rail D5......

From past posts I understand there are issues with D5 injectors? Also, although quieter and more powerful I wonder if the D5 can match the Audi engine for economy. My Tdi has been showing over 50 mpg for some time now. It is of almost legendary status being used in countless Golfs, Passats, Audis and Skodas mostly in 1.9 litre form before they resorted to common rail like Volvo and everyone else. Regards.

Hmmmm, I get an indicated 45mpg average out of mine and a calculated monthly average of about 40 - 43 mpg also.

However I do tend to give it some stick....
