Default Leaking a bit of petrol when filling

Hi guys
The old girls is letting a bit of fuel by somewhere when filling up. What’s the most likely suspect for this?

Hi,

Couple of possibles- the tank might have a leak from the seam that runs round it halfway up, or it might be the big o-ring seal between the filler tube and the tank.

It’s not hard to remove the tank completely, only a few bolts.

I took the tank out of the 1978 I used to own, see this page in my project thread for some photos which may help:

Cheers

A key clue would be to observe the exact circumstances when this occurs.
If it is only when filling then this must be a leak somewhere in the filler/pipe system, as Bugjam suggests.
Is there a visible leak, or just a smell of petrol?
Could it be a perished or disconnected vent pipe, letting petrol back up when filling?

If the tank itself leaks, the seam mid-way up being the prime suspect, then it happens whenever the tank is more than half full. You can generally see a dampness around the seam, usually on the left hand side where there is a mud-trap.

Thank you for the replies.

It’s only on fill up as far as I know there is no damp on the tank or split in the seem. It drops when filling so I’m assuming it’s something to do with the filler side of things. I need to take a proper look and sort it out.

Appreciate the advice and pointers though 👍

Start by inspecting the seal at the filler neck as it might be the culprit; when my GLT's tank was replaced ubder an insurance claim the main dealer decided to save some money by re-using the original seal.

Having to pay for the car's recovery to their premises, remove the tank again, fit a new seal and re-fit the tank cost more than doing the job properly the first time.
