Smile Return of SFSS

I have bitten the bullet and purchased a nice shiny new battery for SFSS.

As it's been lying, forlorn and ignored, in my garage for a couple of years I felt this was the least I could do for it.

Using a 24mm socket on a ratchet handle I "barred" (as our former colonials would say) the engine over several times to make sure it wasn't seized then hooked up the battery. Then I pulled, cleaned and re-installed fuses 4 and 6 to help the fuel pump work its magic. Key in the ignition, check it was in neutral and pray to the Norse gods...

Much cranking ensued, along with a couple of coughs and splutters but no sustained running; I suspect that fresh fuel from my nearby BP garage will reslove the problem.

Once it runs I'll inflate the tyres and drive it out into the fresh air and treat the neighbours to the music of a B230E at idle.

As it has been sat for a while check for moisture in the distributor cap.

The distributor cap interior was bone dry; I think the cold start circuitry is cabbaged though. It cranks over and stumbles but catches if I put my foot on the throttle. (Not WOT, as there's a need to get lubricant circulating and such-like, just enough to keep air and fuel flowing.)

But it runs, Igor, it runs!

That's good news! It probably needs a good old italian tune up then, I've just got my 360 back on the road after 9 years and it wasn't running 100% until I gave it a proper thrashing and now it runs nicely and doesn't diesel when I turn it off.

I need a couple of dry days before I can do much more to SFSS; a gallon of BP's standard unleaded went in to top up the stale unleaded that's been in the tank since time imemorable (and give the fuel pump something other than air to move) before my last post.

With dry weather I can shift the stuff that's accumulated around the car out of the garage, inflate the tyres and drive it out into the open and do a proper assessment of what it needs (money, insurance to get it to the MoT tester, fresh fluids, money, tyres, VED, more money - there's a pattern developing here) and more garage space for the stuff that's been moved to get it out.

I'm reasonably confident about its getting through an MoT as it had only a coupe of advisories when last presented to the garage. Then I can re-fit the auxiliary gauges and enjoy driving it around.
