Xc90 d5 56 plate 193500 miles.
Had this happen today doesn’t sound too good, metal on metal. Think it may need a new engine it did need rockers and lifters so guessing it’s connected but getting horrific vacuum and noise through the air box as well.

Had it in my local garage today and they’re confident it’s broken a rocker or 2 so had it recovered upto Hallam and suthern specialists in Swadlincote. They’re going to look at it tomorrow or Wednesday then let me know but they’ve got a 10 plate 185 engine there with 74000 miles on, so looking very likely it’s going to be having that fitted but will keep you updated.

It should not be a difficult/too expensive job. These engines are (usually) very robust, so there is a good chance the replacement unit will be OK

Another change of plan they’ve rung me back and managed to get it down to £1900 plus vat, so it’s going to get done.

Just got it back, had the gearbox oil done as well, a massive difference in the way it drives nice and quiet and pulls really well so fingers crossed it will keep going now, my plan is for another 3 years.
