Default Help! Lumpy Idle delayed/Slow Throttle Response

A bit of advice please.
I went to view a 2004 D5 XC90 today with the intention to buy it. The car was fundamentally good and looked after but when I started the engine just did have a continuous rhythm to it. The tick over was quite lumpy and rhythmic rather than continuous as I've experienced other I've viewed.
The throttle response was not instant and snappy as the others. When I blipped the throttle quickly the revs didn't pick up straight away but it was delayed and slow, more like I experienced on my lumbering Grand Voyager engine rather than the nice response one should get from this engine
The bloke was swearing blind it had always been like it from the day he had it 18 months ago!
Any one got any thoughts. Should I leave it alone or can anyone shed any light on the issue?
Ta!

maybe not the answer your looking for, but if it has rough idle and throttle not responsive then it will be a stab in the dark. as said could be anything from a fuel filter, air filter to pipes, has the car any error codes in the system i am unsure but on the v70 2004 at the end of the indicator stalk you have the info button if you press that in then press the rear fog switch a couple of times the computer will tell you what dtcs are stored in what modules. if thats the same as the xc90 give that a go and see what dtcs are storedif any.
hope that helps
