Default ignition key won't go passed Pos 1

I have just had to leave my car on the roadside as I went to get in and start the car I put the key in and it will not go passed POS 1. the steering lock comes off fine and all electrics work but it will not go any further no matter how much I tried.
I'm waiting for the breakdown company to arrive and maybe tow it home for me.
Could this be a common fault and how can I fix it so at least i can drive it until I get it fixed properly.

Thanks in desperation

It's not a Geartronic stopped in-gear is it? iirc you can only start engine in Park.

I had a similar thing with my 2002 V70. Fortunately it was at home at the time, and still under warranty. Breakdown people couldn't do anything, so it was trucked to main dealer. They replaced the lock body (same key). I gather the shear bolts have to be drilled out.

Sorry if this is bad news!

Is that something that can be done on a DIY basis?
Approx how much is a new lock?

I need this done as soon as possible as I need the car on a daily basis.

This is a known fault with the ignition lock. A small tab of metal breaks off internally and jams the lock so it won't go past Position I. This happened on my wife's 2007 XC90. I got it going by loosening the heavy steel plate (about 4 cm x 5 cm) on the bottom of the ignition lock and this freed the lock. (This plate will not come fully free without disassembling the entire lock.)

I was able to fish out the broken tab and this allowed me to tap the plate back into place and the thing has worked for the six months since. But one could just leave the plate loose. Search the XC90 forum for this long thread. Go to the end of the thread and work backwards.

The professional repair is to replace the ignition lock with a factory ordered one which takes the original key.

See post #41 page 5 http://volvoforums.org.uk/showthread...osition&page=5

The lock in my wife's XC90 jammed in our driveway so it was convenient to work on it. I spend a day of tinkering and reading about the repair on the internet to arrive at my solution.

The old link on the video is no longer active. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzUduzjR9W4.

But I did the fix with the lock in place on the steering column. I am only linking to the video so you can see how the lock is constructed. you do not have to pull out the lock cylinder to do what I did. Just loosen the plate on the bottom and the lock may become free to turn.

Thanks for the advice Jim.I will certainly take a read of that thread.
The recovery people have now towed it to my local independent Volvo dealers in Bridgend, who are very good I might add,for them to look at on Monday.

Thanks all for your replies and I've got plenty of reading to do tonight.

Cheers

I currently have the same problem with the car on my front drive!

As I understand it, you can take the ignition switch element off the end of the lock barrel and operate it with a screwdriver, but you still need the key turned to Position 1 for the immobiliser and steering lock.

To do so you need to remove the top & bottom plastic shrouds on the steering column to gain access and then I believe the switch is held on by 2 screws.

I was hoping someone would post detailed instructions to my earlier post yesterday!

Cheers

John

You also have to disconnect the mechanical cable connection from the back of the ignition switch, then push in the inner cable in order to allow the gearshift to be shifted out of park and into driving gears.

I think the ignition switch may have to be in Position I to withdraw the mechanical cable.
