Best tyres
After lots of weighing up the pro's and con's of many of the recommended tyres I plumped for a set of these
https://www.mytyres.co.uk/rshop/Tyre...L-SUV/R-334144 Super price, super quiet and so far great for the price. The only other tyre would have been: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Avon/ZX7.htm or if more readily available: https://www.4x4tyres.co.uk/235-60-18...s-103v_5003008 However, with the state of the roads, additional air ride suspension would help! |

The handling of my XC90 was terrible, we had the wheels laser aligned, and sent it to a Volvo specialist to check over. He said it was fine, but maybe change the Kumho's to either Continental, Pirelli or Michelin. I've Pirelli Scorpion Verdes on the Evoque and like them so went to my local dealer asked for the Pirellis and he said the Michelins were better, so put on a set of Michelin CrossClimates. Made a massive difference to the handling, was really twitchy with the Kumho's. Didn't think it would make such a difference, but it has. Plus they're quieter as well. £660 all in and we're now keeping the XC90!

Colin, with the Michelin Crossclimates, what tyre size? And what rim width 8J?

Hi guys I'm in the tyre research phase of ownership for my XC90 D5 sport, tyre size is 255/50/r19s most recommendations are for the 17s going through all 100 odd pages.
Currently have Michelin latitudes on which are after 9k down from circa 8mm to 3.2-2.mm front to rear iirc around 20% motorway rest a-b road commutes. Not impressed with the wear if I'm honest as I'm a pretty smooth driver always use gears to slow ahead of time and gentle cornering. Grip in the dry and wet on tarmac is fine however loose gravel and wet grass quite poor if I'm honest. 10mph on a slight run off on the side of the road the back end was sliding only the front which hot tarmac first prevented a full on slide. We basically live down a single car lane potholed and undulated with gravel and grass verges however some of it is badly deteriorated to the point your almost offroading haha. Anyway 3 questions I can think of off the top of my head For the UK's sporadic weather would you run winters or all seasons all year round rather than two sets of wheels. I've seen a few posts mentioning the use of 55 profile rather than the 50 and I've found the 55 (I'm guessing due to more common use on land rovers) cheaper overall saving around 100-200 per full set make and type dependant. Would these be a viable tyre size option? No scrubbing etc Lastly I guess what tyre would you recommend in the 50 or 55 profile either all season or winter? I may end up buying a set of 17s later on but as I need tyres and coming up to winter I thought I'd do my research and ask. I'd have gone Michelin CCS but due to the current tyre wear I was put off of putting down £180 per corner. If they're not going to last. Cheers all Last edited by Danjwilko; Oct 11th, 2019 at 20:14. |

Just ordered a new set of winter tyres.
Vredestein WinTrac Xtreme S in 235/65 R17 108H I had these as a recommendation on my LR Disco4, so I thought, I'll give them a try on the XC90 as well. What I liked most on these tyres is there sidewards stability. We'll see, how that works out, I'll update here.

Vredestein Wintracs were my favourite winters on my BMW X5's, wear was great, road grip amazing, totally transformed the BMW into a very capable 4x4 in icy and wintry conditions and certainly kept me on the move on very long cross country commutes.
My XC90 now has a set of Nokian WR winters as I bought the wheels/tyres set to use instead of the 19" wheels which came with my xc90 Sport - not really had any cold to speak of yet, but they have some good reviews. Will report back!

Here we go, today I got my new tyres fitted.
Vredestein SnowTrac Extreme S in 235/65 R17, each tyre for 113.- all included (Price is good to very good for my region Munich). Did the first 80km with them - nice!
I'll update as I get more experience with them.

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m147b2584...0_19_255_50R19 I'm running on 2nd set of these in 235-60-18 ....first set lasted 4 years and gave very nearly 40k miles ....quite adequate for British winter and all season so leave on all year round. I run on 107v XL because the side wall is re-inforced and takes the pot holes and ruts better and the 107 is kinder on weight....but that's just my opinion. Always run on eco pressure of 39psi and have alignment checked after or at fitting. Your 255-19 size will probably always cause a price issue over the other sizes.
