Noisy suspension and stiff steering
As above, I have a front end knock, on startup and over bumps, checked wishbones, trackrod ends, springs and all seem ok, also have intermittent heavy steering especially at low speed i.e when parking, have had RAC out and has found following codes,

Heavy steering sounds like insufficient power steering assist, which could be due to:
1. Oil low 2. Wrong oil 3. Pump failing 4. Pump belt slipping Check all the above As for suspension knocks: check also the torque rod mounted at the front bottom of the engine, this has rubber bushes and absorbs torque twists and vibrations of engine and gearbox. The bushes wear and then you have metal on metal with a knocking sound that sounds like a suspension knock. The good news is the torque rod is extremely easy to replace and can be done at home with a socket set in your driveway. I had it happen on my D5 engine and feared all sorts of suspension issues but it was just the torque rod.

Thanks for quick response, I suspected torque rod as I had issues on a previous V70 although sound is different, thing that made me think it could be this is the fact that it vibrates as soon as I put in in D when cold

Ok, I've been under the car today and the torque mount is just flapping in the breeze so have ordered a new one, also the rear right bush on the front subframe has a small amount of movement, are the poly inserts as good as they say?

Oh and how much side to side movement is acceptable on the prop shaft?

Yes, the inserts are effective and straightforward to fit. You will need new bolts from Volvo as they are single-use stretch bolts (TTY).

Ah ok didn't know about the bolts, thank you
Are the bolts a must? The description of the inserts doesn't mention it, just remove bolt, put the insert in and put the bolt back in Last edited by WarrenandZoe; Jun 30th, 2019 at 12:35. |
