I've asked for several voltage figures.
If the earth strap is dodgy, you could feasibly get the engine running intermittently but because so much engine management is grounded through the earth strap, all manner of strange and/or intermittent behaviour could ensue if the strap isn't 100%.
We're just needing more information for now.

Removing the battery on a running engine is a very bad idea, whatever fuel it runs on.

Is it possible that an earthing strap to the engine has failed? It might be instructive to connect a jump lead between the engine block and the battery negative terminal and seeing if it makes any difference.

Yes, definitely left in Park thanks.
I've been through all of the combinations of the automatic gearbox when I worked through one of the suggestions made on a thread from ages ago, running through Park, Drive, Reverse etc a few times in case that made a difference, but it didn't.
Thanks for the nudge though, it's great to know that there are so many people who are willing and able to offer advice and info.

Asked neighbour who tested the battery - these are his answers:
- He placed the tester probes on the negative and positive, the readings were 13.4v and that reading held when the key was being turned.
- The engine would not crank at all.
- They put the headlights on and normally the lights would remain on normally, but they dimmed straight away.

unless that battery had just been unplugged from being boosted / charged it deffo dodgy. A fully charged battery wont be over 13 volts if its been off charge for half hour

tbh first thing I would do is check fuses then failing that hit the starter with a rubber mallet / check the connections

As my video here shows, 13.4v on a healthy battery is possible for quite some time after it was last charged.
Regardless, the battery voltage should drop during an attempted start so the fact that it doesn't suggests a major voltage drop problem.
The suggestion of using a jump lead as an earth strap is an excellent and easy check as are voltage drop tests suggested earlier.

If your neighbour was a diesel engineer, this is bread and butter work and he probably won't need telling.
Tell him anyway though..
