That makes life both easier and more "interesting" Tommy.

First of all, you'll likely have a 12 tooth reluctor ring in the back axle so will need to be careful on your choice of replacement speedos if you can actually find one.

Secondly there's no ECU to worry about so no problems there!

Chances are at that age it's a VDO cluster, there is an untested 740 Turbo cluster available at the moment but i don't know if it's Yazaki or VDO, it's from a 1988 car so a good chance it's VDO but you'd need photos of both the back and front of it and compare the two :

To be honest there could be a number of problems, have you done the basic improvement procedure for the instrument cluster? Remove the cluster, disconnect the multiplugs (they are all different and can only refit in one place), there is usually a single wire with a push on female spade connection, note where this goes and once it's out, clean the contacts where the multiplugs go with fine emery cloth (don't use sandpaper ) and likewise the "fingers" in the multiplugs. Once you've cleaned those, use a thin screwdriver under them to gently ease them up to make them more "bow" shaped, they lose their springiness over time and don't make such good contact.

Refit and test it. While you have it out though, take plenty of photos of the back and front of the cluster making sure you get the multiplug connections and their relative positions.
