V70 rear shock absorbers
Hi all,
The rear shocks in my Dad's V70 are knackered. I've had a look through VIDA this evening at the parts diagram, but I need a bit of help. On the parts diagram list, it lists multiple part numbers for the shock absorbers & they all say "for vehicles marked with 36, 37 etc" & to refer to "vehicle details" to find out what the marking is. When I click on "vehicle details", nothing comes up apart from an error saying "no connection with QW90". How do I know what the marking is so I order the right shock? **Note, DICE wasn't plugged into the OBD2 port. The VIN for the car is saved on VIDA already.

You'll have to look at the number in the left lower corner of this plate, it is on the rear of the B pillar on the right side. |

Yup, check the plate on the passenger (drivers side) door piller (near the door hinge). It should be the digits 9 & 10 from the start,

I had a look at the plate & used the number on it to identify the shocks I need.
Any suggestions as to where to get parts from, companies you've used/would recommend?

I ordered two rear shock absorbers & mounts from Mill Volvo in Newcastle (Volvotradeparts on Ebay) for my Dad's car. The total cost was £315, which includes VAT & postage. They're in stock & should arrive this Friday, all being well.
Mill Volvo were £105 cheaper than my local dealership (They wanted £420)! As its a company vehicle & my Dad is VAT registered, he can claim the VAT back. The shock absorbers on the car currently are knackered & need to be changed as soon as... its a work horse, carries weight often & is used daily. Admittedly, I could have got Bilstein's cheaper online, but the parts would have been coming from abroad. I've heard/read there's delays shipping due to the pandemic & this was also mentioned on the website I was looking at. I understand under current circumstances that parts are probably being sent as fast as possible, probably with limited staff on site etc & delays are inevitable. The "genuine" Volvo shock absorbers I purchased are made by Sachs as far as I know. Sachs appeared to be more expensive than the Bilstein's when I was looking online. Not that there's anything wrong with Bilstein's of course, but my Dad didn't want to be hanging around waiting for parts that could take a while to arrive from abroad. Ordering from Volvo was the quickest option (not the cheapest I admit, but its his car & his choice).

Word of warning on Bilstein shocks from personal experience. The top end of their range may be all singing and dancing but the bottom end do not seem to be any better than anyone else's. I fitted a complete set to another make of car and within 9 months both the rear shocks failed the MoT for leaking. I sent them back to Bilsteins who were very sniffy about admitting that there was anything wrong with them. I know the MoT tester personally and he had no axe to grind in failing the shocks and confided in me that they were leaking despite being in as new condition. So now I avoid Bilstein shocks! The brand hype for their "racing" shocks sells their cheap and not particularly better "cooking" shocks which are as cheap and cheerful as other less expensive brands.

Safe to say the old ones were shot! Dad is now contemplating replacing the front shock absorbers too, including the spring seats & bearings. £460 including VAT & postage from Mill Volvo (volvopartstrade) on Ebay.
