I have a 240 GL Auto and it is drinking fuel like a fish in water, it is doing 18 miles to the gallon. Is there anything I can do to get this higher? Any suggestions welcome.

Has it always been this thirsty?

I seem to recall there was a 2 litre carb engine produced around 1985 with a Solex Cisack (not sure if that is the correct spelling) carb that was very thirsty. A Volvo mechanic told me a London TV company had a fleet of them and threatened to cancel the contract with Volvo if something was not done. Every car was fitted with a different engine.

Not really but it has never been good. My car is an injected and seem to be getting worse, so much so, that I'm thinking of change my car, which would be a shame because I really like the volvo but if I change it will have to be another seven seater and most proparly be a MPV

My last 240 was a 2.1 injected 4-speed with o/d, 30 on a run and 23/25 around town, and I recall that when I had a problem with the injection system it took a long time to find the fault. You need to check the basics, including tyres and pressures. Also ensure the auto box fluid is at the correct level. If you know how to check the injectors then do that after the basics, otherwise get a mechanic to look at it.

There may also be a small leak somewhere in the fuel system.
