An XC90 at your budget would probably be a money pit bud.☹️

I have a '90 745 and a low milage '98 V70 T5 CD auto (20v 2.4 ltr) for 2+ years now. The trim on the V70 is a bit plasticy/creeky in places! However, the car is a total a delight to drive but only turns in about 24.4 mpg!

Currently prices are good value for the right one but as usual exercise caution when buying.

Bob
My 140 BHP auto has returned 28.9 MPG over the 16209 miles and almost 7 years of my ownership Bob.

Regards, John.

A manual would be better than that, so not bad all . Probably better than a 7/9 series.

But if that’s not what is wanted, it’s academic.🤔

Would be abit different as the wife would want it 😂 I can't justify the extra tax and insurance though.

Agree totally, but I prefer autos ...

In contrast, my aforementioned 745, 2.3 petrol auto, driven similarly, returned 27.3 MPG over 62746 miles and almost 16 years of detailed stats.

Miles covered per gallon will vary with many different factors, but my experience may give Steven a rough idea of what he could expect.

Regards, John.

When our long-term ownership 745 finally died of terminal corrosion in 2016, we looked in vain for a suitable replacement. We eventually settled on a late P1 (2000 'V' reg) that was tucked away in the corner of the dealer's forecourt. Long story short; we bought it 'as seen' with 118K up for £550. We have it still, now with 135K up, Apart from routine maintenance and MOTs, all it has required is attention to the brakes and tyres.

A very worthy car; almost, but not quite, as commodious as the 7 and 9 series and well within your budget. They are FWD of course, and after the RWD cars, the steering lock is enormous! Mine even came with the integrated kiddie seat in the centre of the rear seat, as well as the rear facing child seats in the boot, neither of which I have a use for, but which could be useful to you with your new addition.

Being newer, there are probably still more around to choose from, too!

Regards, John.

Case in point. Only down the road.

If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. I see that.😁
I think that is pretty good advice from John. I've seen John's V70 - one would not get a 740/940 (and certainly not a 240) of anywhere near the same quality for what it cost.

The V70 that Andrew posted a link to looks like an excellent option compared with the type of 740/940 one might get for £1,500. The tax it a bit expensive (£395) to me (but then I'm used to historic vehicles) and the MoT history is a bit flaky (but it comes with a new ticket and no advisories):

https://cartaxcheck.co.uk/free-car-c...y/?vrm=SJ52ORT

... overall I'd say it would make more sense that a £1,500 240/740/940 that will be a rustberg at that price.

It also depends on whether or not you want to deal with the FWD aspect of working in the engine bay, I have to deal with a basic 1.2 Clio FWD and that's more than enough transversely mounted pain in the proverbial for me.

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately we've got our hearts set on an old one. Wife really wants us to have one aswell. Luckily iv got a welder and have had many projects on the go. An MOT failure would almost be perfect for myself. Though one I can drive straight away would be ideal.

Thanks Steve

That’s what really counts Steve.
