Turning over by hand, and it turns over but it does feel as though there is a point where it needs more effort, also some rather disconcerting sounds that seem to be a scraping sort of noise, although with the ratchet click and belts making a noise it is hard to be definitive.

Hmmm, oh well, only one way to find out I suppose…..err no start, turns over but not a hint of firing…….

Now just got to decide where to go from here??

I'd have put money on it being something like that, Steve. It was a broken clip that caused my bottom hose to blow off, so don't beat yourself up over something that could happen to any one of us. I believe the modern stainless ones are more robust than the older mild steel variety.

If it turns over as normal on the starter but won't fire, then as others have said, it can only be lack of fuel or sparks.

Have you pulled the plugs? If so, what do they look like? Given the circumstances, I wouldn't be surprised if they have suffered as a result. I'd start by cleaning and regapping
them as a minimum; possibly replace them if you have a spare set. Work systematically and start with the simple / easy checks before moving on to more complex possibilities if necessary.

Regards, John.

Hose clips:~
Always worth checking these particularly those that are hidden or awkward to get at and susceptible to rust- go stainless and I now double clip a lot of hoses since I had one rust through on a hidden part of the lower hose (not a Volvo, but it could be)

+1 for stainless steel hose clips. I have tended to replace the ABA originals with JCS marine-grade kitemarked stainless steel ones. The only problem is they don't come in quite the same size ranges. This only gave me an issue on the oil cooler hoses which are in a confined space.

Especially if you replace a hose with new I have found it is important to go back and retighten the hose clamps after a month or so. The new hose deforms slightly around them, I guess with cooling and heating cycles, and they can be quite loose a little while later.

How is the situation with the car? It always breaks my heart when a 2/7/900 goes, as here in Portugal/Spain we see so few of them on the road.

I hope you can recover yours. Have you figured out no start thing?
First thing that came to mind was the CPS. Overheating can damage the sensor or even perhaps the wire.

EDIT: My car also overheated one time, but it was before I bought it so I don't know how bad it was. I have the receipt from the repair at the dealership and it was almost 4k€ and by the replaced parts list, it seems to have been bad. HG, machining of head, rad, etc.
In your case, the weird noises your lady describes are frightening, but lets hope for the best.
