Default Volvo 740 Estate Turbo Intercooler November 1988 Radiator

Hi I would like to thank everyone for reading this post and for help last time with my Brake Calipers which are now sorted thanks to Bigg Red. My other car had been off the road and we have been using this as our daily but now the radiator needs replacing. As far as we can tell the radiator is fine it is the plastic fittings that have perished. We thought we had sourced one through a Classic Volvo specialist (and the one we purchased was the one replacing the serial number on the old radiator). Unfortunately although the radiator was the correct size the fittings were wrong - too small and tapered (I have had a refund). Any ideas. We have a place locally that makes bespoke radiators for sports cars so I was thinking of contacting them. Have not found a Breaker who has one and don't want to keep paying postage for the wrong item. Could the serial number be wrong? Any ideas I would be most grateful. We have owned the car 20 plus years and I love driving it (apart from the fuel cost (: . The only thing that has needed replacing in the last 20 years has been a water pump (bought it with a dodgy one) and the calipers aside from tyres, exhaust etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Nissens do a good range of radiators for older Volvos. If you put your exact model details into an online search, such as:

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/...or-parts-10203

what options do you get and how do they compare with the one the specialist sent you?

It would be a good idea to take careful measurements of your existing radiator to compare with the ones recommended online before ordering anything. Once you have a recommended Nissens part number you should be able to find detailed schematics online showing its exact dimensions in order to validate the suggestion before ordering.

There is only one radiator for petrol engines.

Is yours a D24?

Thanks, I will ask my other half tonight. The radiator we ordered matched up with the number on the old radiator but the new radiator had tapered ends and would not fit (hope that makes some sense but I will ask him and reply properly. We have owned it for about 20 years, bought it for £500 as a stand it when we had a problem with our Carlton Estate. We have always put petrol in it but do not know a lot of history. Bought it from a young man who said it was an old man's car, best decision we ever made. Oddly enough in the petrol cap it does say diesel so we just thought that it was a replacement cap, do you think it may be a conversion. I think it was either a fleet car or an airport runner.

Some pictures would definitely help.

As has been said, diesel models (D24T/D24TIC) have a different radiator.

I think there are different options for intercoolers and AC radiators, which could make things appear visually different.

If you're not aware - there is the ability to attach images to the forum in the reply to post (in the 'additional options' below where you type).

Edit: the mention of the tapered radiator sides made me wonder if you received an intercooler instead. This is one of the intercooler types used, and visually appears similar to a radiator:

I will have to work on the photos but have got some. The radiator ordered had the same part number as the broken one. The one that is broken is the main engine radiator. The intercooler radiator is fine and it also has an oil cooler. Apart from the words 740 Turbo and Intercooler on the back it also has the words Volvo Continental. Does not have air con. The part number looks like 1346015. The first two numbers very blurry on photo and underneath it says 5177 England. The radiator wasn’t tapered on the replacement it was the ports that were. They were marginally smaller in diameter, tapered and the thread was finer than the original.

I am not sure if I have mentioned it’s an automatic will that make a difference? Thanks again everyone.
