Default How To Find the Lock Code for key cutting service?

Hi,

I bought a 740 a month ago now, it's a 7 seater estate - 1987 german import.

It's been running well etc, but am having problems with the 'copy' key I have at the moment. It's the only one available with the car, and not the original. It opens the glovebox so is the full key.

I got a copy cut, but can't get them to work - I think my copy isn't quite right as it's playing up - can't unlock for many attempts.

I'm hoping if I get a key cut by code, it'll solve the problem, as other option could be the central locking I suppose.

Anyone know what I need to do to get to the lock 'code' that the key cutters require?

Also will the code be the same on the passenger side as the drivers? ( I have had that panel off already so it's easier to get to).

Many Thanks,

If you take the car to a Volvo dealer with proof of ownership, they should be able to get keys cut from the VIN code.

Hi Thanks,
but I phoned my dealership and they said they don't do the keys anymore. They've referred me to an independent locksmith / key cutter.

Hm, I find that very bad service. I cannot see how a locksmith can do it from a code but maybe he can. There are some who specialise in car keys. Try finding one of those. The code should be on either lock if there is one.

Failing that, you could by new locks from Volvo or used ones with a good original master key from a breaker.

me too!
I was even prepared to pay their asking for a key.. I knew it would be costly but it's essential.

I'll have a look at the barrel of the ignition. Am hoping it's on there, or I'll have to strip a few more bits off the door to get near the lock.

Thanks for your help.
