Although I do not personally use one, I agree with 'GVM', 'DaveNP', 'wimorrison' and others who feel that they have their place for defensive purposes. Increasingly aggressive driving styles and today's 'blame / compensation' culture can only add weight to this argument.

The one occasion that I really did wish that I had one was when we were first in line behind a serious accident that is still subject to police investigation. We both had to give detailed statements, when it would have been so much easier just to hand over the dashcam and say 'that is what happened'.

Happy new year everybody.

John.

Use a file sharing solution like Dropbox where you upload file and the recipient gets an email with a link to download it. When I sent footage to insurance company, I first shortened the clip to the relevant length and used video compression software to reduce size of AVI file. Also burned it onto a disc and posted it to them.

Hopefully those who are tasked to watch them will have the wisdom to interpret them, over the years there have been a few who have posted clips on this forum complaining of another road user but the responses they received were often not as supportive as they may have hoped.

I'm reminded of a time when I was younger and a bit more hot headed, I was involved in what nowadays we would call a road rage incident and full of righteous indignation I stormed into the local police station to complain. The officer at the desk calmly listened and took down my 'statement', when I had vented my fury he pointed out that if the other party came in to complain they would listen to her too, and the fact that I had shouted 'Foul' first would not mean that they would presume me innocent and her guilty.

yep...agreed, but you can imagine them getting swamped by disgruntled motorists trying to vent anger and get revenge for what may be nothing more than a legitimate over take for example, oh well, we'll just have to sit back and see what happens..........

What goes around comes around!

By having a dash cam if you do anything wrong at all yourself driving then you open yourself to prosecution also?

So learn to drive properly yourself before committing others.

While nobody can claim to be the 'perfect' driver, every day we all see evidence of less than perfect driving and there's an awful lot more of them on the road than there is of me, so I personally would not be without a dashcam now.

It's got very little to do with the quality of the driving the owner of the dashcam. I could be doing the shopping in Tesco while someone reverses into my car out the front and you can bet they won't bother leaving their insurance details on the windscreen but if I've got evidence of what happened, it wont be my insurance that foots the bill.

I like the idea of a Dashcam, but wasn't sure about the whole CCTV big brother aspect. I feel like either everybody should have them or nobody should have them and not inbetween.

However, I received a very nice dashcam for Christmas this year so I tried it out and installed it in such a position that it's completely hidden from my field of vision (sits behind the rear view mirror).

It starts recording a second after turning the key so you completely forget that it's there.

It's nice to be able to look back on certain situations on the road too.

I think I'll keep it, im converted.
