XC90 Dashcam Hampshire

Does anyone have any recommendations for fitting services for a dashcam front and rear to my XC90 2012. I have bought a couple of cameras and fitting kits but looking at it I would rather get it fitted by someone who knows what they are doing but Volvo say they do not fit nor do they know of anyone. I was hoping for someone in Hampshire but I do not mind travelling out of Hampshire if it means it gets done right. Thanks

I’m no auto electrician but pretty handy with most things - I did three of these myself using the piggy back type fuse holders into a switched live. The most time consuming job is taking the trim off and routing cables out of sight for a neat install.

Careful goes with the trim removal - and it’s a Doddle I found. Front and rear dash cams put into a V40, V70 and XC90.

Firstly get yourself some of these....

Piggy back fuse holder, cigarette lighter socket and heat shrink cable connector. Other places sell them - i just like the bay of fleas!

The heat shrink cable connector can be replaced with other suitable connectors - i just had these spare.

The idea is that you wire the cigarette lighter socket to the piggy back fuse holder and then connect them (piggy back) onto a switched live fuse in the fuse box in front under the steering wheel. Mine is in to a switched live as I didn't want it live all the time.

You then connect the dashcam to the cigarette lighter socket - assuming your dashcam came with the appropriate plug.

Access to the fuse box is easy - remove the panel above the drivers pedals, there's also a fuse box to the right of the dashboard - access via the removeable panel at the end.

There are also earthing points that can be used.

Wire it all in and check that the dashcam works before you start taking other bits apart.

Mount the dashcam - mine is behind the rear view mirror so that I can't see it when driving. My one doesn't have a built in screen - it's all viewed on phone etc.

Remove the A Pillar trim on the drivers side - there are two covers on the handle area - take then out (sharp knife!) and undo the bolts holding the handle and pillar trim in.

Gently loosen the trim - there are airbag cables behind it. There is a plastic clip that needs rotating 90 degrees then removing.

This then gives you easy access to run cables from the fuse box area up and under the A Pillar trim then under the headlining to the dashcam on the front windscreen.

My front dashcam has a cable joining it to the rear one. Connect that cable and route it under the headlining along the length of the car. You might need to ease the rubber off in some places but it's easy enough. Time and patience!

The rear cam - I actually mounted mine on the inside of the rear windscreen and not the top of the car inside. Much neater and less chance of getting damaged when I shovel stuff in the boot!

Remove rear light - it should come out with a small flat screwdriver and ease the clips. Second hand ones are less that £8 on fleabay if needed - don't ask me how i know!

There are screws in there to hold the plastic trim to the car - undo them.

There are also two covers (one each side) on the plastic trim - remove those and unscrew the bolts - thus enabling the large plastic rear ceiling trim to come away. It clips in to the body so gentle does it.

You can then run the cable to the end of the boot and you are aiming to feed it through the black cable cover that goes into the actual tailgate...

The painful bit - maybe easy maybe not!

You need to get the cable to the rear dashcam through the black rubber cable management boot.

It does go - you need to remove the boot ends and have something long to poke through but it will go (eventually).

Remove the black trim on the tailgate - it's clipped in and gently toughly does it and you have easy access to route the cable. Mount rear dashcam just away from where the trim lives.

Check dashcam works and put the trim all together.
