1.9d poor mpg help/advice needed
Can anyone help with my problem.
I have an 1.9d v40 115HP. Car is 2004. I'm getting pretty low fuel figures. Around 8 litres per 100km on open roads which is catastrophic to say at least (My old omega 2.2 petrol was doing 15% better than this). Car had an engine rebuilt recently. Idles fine, pulls like a train on turbo engaged but I can see quite a bit of oil behind the engine over the turbo so I guess it is leaking oil somewhere, and it is quite sluggish on lower revs especially with aircon engaged. Can anyone point me what to check and in what order. I'm quite low on funds since I payed for engine rebuild. Cannot go to the mechanic who did the rebuild since he is in another part of the country. Thanks |

For anyone confused it equates to approximately 29mpg. Mine gives 46mpg.
The oil leak sounds like the engine shut off valve seal, over time they shrink and fail to seal properly. Here's a link to a thread about it; https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=114946 I'm unsure as to what could be causing the seriously low fuel economy though, considering that it pulls properly as you say, but I'm uneducated and just muddle through. Has the economy got worse after the rebuild or has it been bad straight away?

Aldred,
I have the same issue, and it began after changing the timing belt.I went up from 6.5l/100km to just over 8.1. What i saw wat the camshaft repairpoints can not be adjusted as the valves touch the piston. Had no time to find why but even if it takes me to pull the head,I will find it. |

I guess the timing is going to be a major suspicion, especially if the mpg was okay before the rebuild.
Other things could be MAF sensor (usually loss of power and smoke with this), EGR valve, leaky injector, seized brakes (eventually they would start to smell/catch fire though).

My guess also but there is no one that gives a solution for the camshaft timing.
Why oh why can't I syncronise the camshaft point with the repair point and does the valves than touch the piston? |
