I managed to get 38mpg when on a 160mile trip. Now Im getting around 26-28 around town and 30-32 out of town. That's driving as eco as I can. Driving to Austria in April and will be polishing the car and taping the seams to attempt to reduce drag. I'm going to change the oil aswell. Not for mpg but just to make sure it's all ok on the trip. That's with my 96 v40 2.0 CD

Just done a round trip to Germany - 895 miles in total....

Brimmed the tank before leaving - re-filled it in Luxembourg 5 miles into return journey with 440 miles showing, fuel light had only just come on with display showing 60 miles remaining....

Tank took 57 litres (at £1.05 per litre), which by my calculations works out at just over 35mpg - 95% of the run had been at 80mph....

Rest of trip clocked up 455 miles, with detours for lunch in Bruges, shopping in Calais, and a takeaway near home - fuel light came on at 435 miles with display showing 55 miles remaining, switching to 'Fuel' shortly before reaching home....

Have yet to re-fill, but anticipating it'll take about 62 litres, working out at just over 33mpg for the return trip, which with the additional urban miles meant only 90% was at 80mph....

Making the average for the entire trip just over 34mpg - good, or bad?

I,ve owned a '97' S40 1.8S for two years now, covered 14k miles in that time, mainly urban commuting with roughly monthly 320 mile round trips between Central Scotland and South Cumbria.
I,ve always kept a note of my fuel usage and I get 29.5 mpg urban and 34.5 on the long runs (at a steady 70 mph).
I,ve done the Cumbria run both ways with and without cruise control and can confirm that cruise uses more fuel (31.5 mpg).
To see this put the computer into instant consumption whilst driving in cruise and then without cruise and see how often the mpg takes a dive when the cruise is on compared to when it's off.
Fuel consumption is also dependant on how you drive, some drivers can get double the miles of others. (Going down Beatock and Shap in neutral saves a fair bit, (old lorry drivers trick).
