Default Jacking Point

So I jacked up the S70 last weekend, just to lift the car enough to access the oil filter, and the jack vanished through the sill in a cloud of rusty dust!

The car has been in to our local trusted Volvo indy, Dyrdals of York, and they've priced the repair at £200. They also checked over the underside and could find no other nasty surprises.

But it just goes to how important it is to stick to the advice that says never rely on a jack alone to support the car!

Good grief, Jack, you had a lucky escape there. I don't think I have ever lifted the car from the actual jacking points. I usually use a 2t trolley jack placed under the subframe (remember to release the handbrake), a suitable piece of lumber to spread the weight, raise the whole front and then drop it down on a pair of axle stands before going under. I wouldn't trust it any other way.

Nice to hear it's repairable and hasn't spread to other areas.

Thanks Liam. I don't have a trolley jack, so my routine is to jack the car up, then slide the stands under the subframe, then get busy with whatever needs doing.

On this occasion I never even got as far as sliding the stands under the subframe! I never remove a wheel until the car is firmly on the stands, nor would I venture under any car that was only supported by a single jack, so there was never any danger at all, but I was a bit surprised that the rust had bitten to this extent!

But Dyrdals have had a good look and assured me that all is otherwise well, so the old girl lives to add a few more miles yet to the 250,000 she's already covered!

Maybe I'll put a trolley jack on my Christmas list!

Yes, can I just confirm, it wasn't me that disappeared in a cloud of rusty dust, it was the car-lifty-uppy type mechanical device!

At this age the rear seat bracket mount into the arch, the arch into the sill, the central sill drainage hole and the by the side of the road style jacking point are all at end of life.

Jacking points is any easy fix, take seat out and carpet, cut out, clean area, weld in new material and double back it. Pretty straight forward, £200 is fine. They were only ever spot welded to the outer skin of the sill, in about 8 spots, but eventually tear off.
