Question very intermittent starting issue

This is probably a well covered subject, but most threads are from owners of cars fitted with turbo's and chipped key fobs.
My 2.0 litre 20v GLT auto estate has covered a genuine 118000 miles with a FVSH from new. All parts ever used are genuine OEM spec. High octane fuel is always used. The car starts on the button 95% of the time Hot or cold. Occasionaly, (somtimes months apart), it will start, then dies, and after several prolonged cranks on the starter it splutters into life. New crankshaft and camshaft position sensors have been fitted, and the fuel filter replaced in response to this without sucess. The car is not fitted with remote central locking, so no keys have an ignition chip.( as far as I am aware)
There are no other issues with the way the car drives at all. From a newbie owner with a lowish spec 850, any suggestions on how to move forward would be very welcome !

This isn't logical - the central locking system and the fob is a completely different system to the immobiliser, which is driven from the chip in the key and that alone, so absence of central locking has nothing to do with whether the car has a key/chip immobiliser system.

As far as I'm aware my V70 has no chip in the key[it was probably coded to the car using a set procedure and the master key when it was first PDI'd all those years ago]yet it still from time to time suffers with the antenna ring issue,it has done since I bought it and now 7 years on I've still not got round to doing anything about it.

All UK P80 cars from 1996 were fitted with transponders in the key and unless your car is non UK it will be the same

Forgot to mention that the car is a 1994 model, so quite an early spec and may differ from post 96 models? I am by no means an 850 expert, so all suggestions are gratefully received and will give me ideas on possible area's to investigate.
