I haven't collected the car yet but when I looked at it the belts were barely visible behind plastic covers which would all need to come off first!
To me the Belt is covered under the fixed price/estimated service cost schedule so why take the risk. £30 for a belt covered under the allocated time for the service or £3k potentially for the replacement totalled engine.

I think I know where I'd rather spend the money.

Yes there's probably lots of cases where a broken belt hasn't taken the Cam belt BUT.... there's lot's of people on here that have had the Aux belt take the Cam belt out.

Clan's advice is the one I'd follow on this & many points.

£30? I spoke to Volvo and they want £275 for an oil/filter change or £600 to do the oil/filter and the aux belt!

I swapped my aux belt myself. Parts weren't too expensive (sorry can't recall how much - certainly less than £100) got mine from a bod on Ebay selling genuine Volvo parts (belt & tensioner)

I took my time and did it in less than an hour. Easiest route was to drop the O/S front wheel off, remove the inner liner, then there's a hole in the bulkhead that makes access much easier. There are video's on YouTube. HTH Cheers Robin

£30 is the cost of the belt on my last service (Before I got the car) I checked last night.

Total cost of the last service was £301.19, previous owner had a 3yr service plan & this was billed back.

Belt cost was 30.60 ex VAT

Was at a Main Dealer in York.

Volvo dealers have fixed price servicing.

Without discount the 6 year or 108,000 miles service (whichever is first) is £880

Without discount the 3 years or 54,000 miles service (whichever is first) is £280

Essentially due to the age of the car they are probably quoting the first (minus the belt). In reality you just need the latter!

£600 seems steep.

As a comparison I haggled with my local Volvo dealer last year and got the 108,000 service (cam-belt) for £580 (£300 off) as they matched a local independent. Not bad and even got a car for the day and a full valet!

Yes It is only the one Aux belt which has to be changed on the 54000 mile service , It is not optional but mandatory .. tell them if it is not done and it breaks it could easily cost them £7000+ for a new engine ..

This only applies if you have the 5 cylinder diesel of course . The later engines have to old style Aux belts which are much more robust
