What about wax oil, made by Hammerite?

Let's say a car that had a rusty subframe, but it was only surface rust. Could a wire brush, maybe light sand paper (some prep basically) and a coat of wax oil do it any harm?

This is the exact stuff I’m talking about, you will see rust start to come through the coating. As soon as it’s penetrated the moisture and salt sets in and that’s it. It’s terrible stuff. I had a Mazda which wasn’t in best shape, gave it some of this black gunk and next mot it was twice as bad, scrape it away and it was bright orange underneath and that was just after one winter. You need a film like fluid film or lanoguard or even heavy lube type sprays such as chain oil offers some protection. The metal still needs to breath.

This guy knows a thing or two about rusty cars, runs a garage in the salt belt area or North America. Lucky to get 10year out a car there if it’s not protected.

Thanks for sharing. I watch South Main Auto regularly, but I don't think I've seen that video... I'll check it out. He's a very honest mechanic and certainly knows his stuff. Cars in the rust belt really do suffer over there, so do vehicles in the colder parts of Canada like Alberta, British Columbia and the North West Territories.

I believe they don't use salt on the roads there, its some kind of chemical that literally eats through cars for fun. Without rust proofing in places like that, a car would be completely rotted out beyond repair in less than 10 years.

@4x4 - So Lanoguard isn't the same as wax oil? You did a great job on it, but its much easier with a ramp. Trying to do that off jacks and jack stands I think would be much harder.
