You may well have a point there. Also never thought about the gearing as raised by Bunkafas and Brickman. A lot more physics going on than you (I) think !

I get 21.5mpg out of my 20v ph1 V70 auto no matter how I drive it. If much rather be spending money on that noise than on the depreciation on a new car.

Well have been using Rydell for the last 4 days , all 30mph roads and 50mph motorway. I think I saw 20mpg for a short while but now showing an average 15.7 mpg AcidicDavey , I recon having the prop attached definitely makes a considerable difference! Was it you ( or Thanatos) that said it's like having an extra 100kg in the car? It feels like it!

I see that Auto-Express today quote the threshold for diesels as being 18,000 miles a year to make them worth while, ignoring DPF problems of course.

My 2013 1.6 T3 V60 (Auto) sipped petrol at an average of 30.1mpg over it's first 8,000 miles. Alas no LPG conversion kit is currently available for this engine but the cost of that might negate the petrol-savings. In days of old I used to use 2 tanks of LPG a day!

Needless to say I am very happy with my "mondeo engined" Volvo, as my neighbors call it!

I have a 97 v70 t5 auto 185k and get 18mpg round town but on a run i can get it to 37-39 on a level motorway at 60 mph nursed along and driven like a clergyman. The norm would be around 33mpg on a run but these cars drink it round town with lots of stop starts i also get noticeably more mpg when i use premium grade petrol

Slightly different car, but I get 23.8mpg out of my '98 C70 T5 GT. My other C70 is a '99 2.4T GT and will do 27.6mpg. Both are auto.

Strangely I see no difference whether using bog-standard unleaded or V-Power.
