Emissions light and limp mode.
Hello. I picked up my V70 two weeks ago after looking around for a good one. I wanted the 1.6d drive model and eventually found one at a dealer in Liverpool. Before buying checked the service history, car was at 75000 miles all services apart from the last one at 72000 were at volvo dealers so all good there. I got hold of the previous owner who were a small company who moved the car on as surplus when their sales rep moved on. When I got the car I booker it into Voltech in Glasgow for a full service for peace of mind. Checked when timing belt is due which is 108000 or 10 years whichever is sooner. I will probably get this changed soon.
Anyway the car was going fine until yesterday and it went into limp mode (wont rev above 2800) but no warning light on. Resolved to book it in to Voltech on Monday but had another short drive in it today when the emissions light came on. What's wrong with it? Sensor fault? additive issue? DPF? |

Hard to say what's wrong .It could be any one of the faults you mentioned. Do put results on here when it's been diagnosed . Is it still under warranty ? If not hope its not too expensive.

Hello, a quick trip to Voltech this morning and the codes read which indicated issue related to DPF. Paul there checked the pipes, removed a sensor, cleaned the contacts and put back together again. He cleared the codes and limp mode gone with no warning light. He thinks a bad connection but said bring it back if it comes on again.
No charge this time as they had only serviced it two weeks before. Great service. |

Hi,
You may also want to go for a decent drive to clear out the filter? Des. . .

Hi You may not be aware that a small dose of two stroke engine oil in the fuel at a 200 to 1 ratio will dramatically reduces, almost halves the carbon particles that block the dpf as it burns the fuel cleaner . I've used it my current V70 D5 for two years , do a lot of short trips and never had a regeneration or any problems with emissions . i used it in my previous v70 for over 5 years and also in my wife Kia . If you do try it buy regular low ash self mix two strke oil NOT synthetic type . You will be surprised how smooth it make the engine and increases low down torque .

Thanks for the feedback, very helpful. I'm doing a return trip from Glasgow to Dundee tomorrow which should give it a burn, I'm quite taken with the two stroke idea - is this definitely suitable for my 1.6 d drive engine? Would you recommend any particular brand?
Can anyone comment on the premium diesel fuels that Shell and Esso do - there's around 10p a litre increase in cost for these - what do they do and is the extra dosh worth it? |

Provided you use mineral based low ash self mix oil you will be fine .As said earlier DONT use synthetic based 2s oil as It doesn't burn as readily . I use Carlube two stroke and buy it at Morrisons as it cheaper their at £2 for 500Ml . That will treat nearly 2 tanks of fuel . Asda sell a 1 Ltr bottle for £5 . As for the more expensive fuel try them then try the cheaper fuel with Two stroke . Same effect . My son noticed the difference within minutes of adding the 2s when filling up.Even my wife who's not a car person noticed the difference in the quieter and smoother running. Its worked for me for many years and doubtless many others but some will say its bad for this and that .Give it a try and let us know how you get on

Back to the garage again as problem came back today going to Dundee. Wouldn't pull a skin off custard. Will give an update once the issue has been figured out.

It is probably a long shot but if you search on this forum, v70 engine slow to accelerate/lack of power and read the items. Your engine may have a similar set up with dpf sensors even though it isnt a D5.

Does this car have a 'wet' DPF? If so doesn't this have to be replaced at 72000 miles? If this is the case are you sure it,s been done by Voltech?
