Smokey cold start S60
Hi guys,
Been looking a S60/V70 2.4 for awhile now. Even posted on here lol https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=301044 Anyways came across a one locally has 165k no history and when asked about the any issues was told it's very smokey first start in the morning after running for few mins it normal then. Was thinking glow plugs but then if trade seller I was thinking he would have at least tried that. It's 07 and 1500 quid. Thanks for any advise in advance just dont know if I should walk away or not |

All depends on what colour the smoke is, as that's more of a clue as to which is giving problems. smoke on startup from cold could be oil [poss valve seals/guides/rings] or unburnt fuel. tbh, id get round there and ask to test drive it from cold, so you may be able to give us some better idea,

2.4 you mean the turbo D5 or the non turbo petrol ? If it's the petrol one, stay far from that. Even at 500 don't touch, the petrol engines are solid and yet to hear of one smoking for some reason. So that one must be having a big issue. While there, may see this for the petrol engine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS3bawaBMMk

Shes the diesel model. Never asked the colour of the smoke. I will maybe ask to see it starting up and see for myself the colour of smoke for myself.. I know from what I read on the forum here they sometimes have problems with engine mounts and it's noticeable on idle. So be looking out of that aswell. Do yous have other tips and tricks that I would need to watch out for. Know how to check for clutch and flywheel issues seen enough of that with VW's to last me a lifetime lol..
Thanks again guys on the replies much appreciated Last edited by Hendy; Dec 6th, 2019 at 20:03. |

unburnt diesel fuel [when cold] will show as a whiteish smoke from the exhaust, its either excess fuel from cold start procedure/not ignited for poss glow plug issue/low compression on cylinder. if smoke has a blue tint, could possibly valve oil seals that have allowed oil in to the cylinders whilst standing, or piston rings.[possibly sticking]. just to give you some clues so to speak.

Kind regards Stephen received_2171273852973898.mp4 Just click the wee box with the cloud. It's only like 10secs long. He added Its like a greyish smoke with a slight hint of blue when you rev it hard...but it eases as the car heats up... Last edited by Hendy; Dec 16th, 2019 at 14:01. |

I'm not downloading a file from a site I've never heard of.
Have you physically seen the car and tested anything like the glow plugs?
