I think 300's are vastly different in terms of values and understandably as they're a completely different car.... For reference I sold a very near perfect 360 GLS last year for £4000 - which is a more desirable model than a 340.

That said, this looks like a nice example - can see it's had a few bodywork bits and bobs in the past by the photos but I'd estimate it would be worth somewhere between £1500 - 2500.

I think that is a very fair assessment, Steve, although for the O.P.'s sake I hope that it would be towards the upper end of that range. I also feel that Alan is very much on the money apropos 2 series cars.

To compare a 3 series car and it's larger cousins is a little like comparing apples with oranges; they are, as you rightly say, quite different cars. In among the 2 and 7 series, I ran both an '86 365GL and a 1.7 '88 344GLE for business purposes racking up a considerable mileage in each. My late MIL also had an '83 365GLE for many years.

We also had a test drive in a 1.4, but felt it a little underpowered; they are quite heavy cars, after all. In our view, while they were a cut above contemporary Fords and the like, they were not built to traditional Volvo standards. They also had a greater propensity to rust, so a survivor in good condition may yet surprise us price wise.

I too wish the O.P. good fortune in selling his car. It would be good if it went to an enthusiast member of this forum, but most will almost certainly have at least one example already. I think the O.P. might do better by offering the car on one of the specialist classic platforms, or even by entering it for auction with someone like Matthewsons'. Either would mean greater exposure and a wider audience without, hopefully, becoming involved with one of the 'chancers' that seem to haunt some other sites these days.

Regards, John.

Thank you Steve and John,

I do so hope I have not given the OP a false impression of the value of his motor car.

I wouldn't have thought so, Alan. I think from his post he is clearly a pragmatic sort of chap who was looking for sound real world advice. As usual, the forum delivered in abundance.

Earlier today, I was made aware of a '75 'barn find' Mk3 Ford Cortina at auction, requiring work, which had already topped £7k with several days still to run. Prices are all over the place, which is one reason that I think he might do better at auction. I'd put a sensible reserve on it - say £2k - and see what happens. I've a feeling that we could be agreeably surprised by the result!

Regards, John.

Thank you John, I hope you are right.

Older Fords (and VWs) do tend to make quite absurd money (in my opinion), which is one of the reasons I like older Volvos - they are still accessible. When Steve (far more knowledgeable than I) told us the 345 might be worth £1,500 to £2,500 a little bit of me wanted to buy it; then I remembered I already have an Amazon and a 240 that I don't use enough .

I hope the OP does manage to get a good price for his late brother's motor car; perhaps he will let us know how he gets on.

Alan

Yes, best of luck to the OP with the sale. I was intrigued myself, but would only consider a slightly earlier car with the earlier dashboard/preferably with variomatic transmission.

My lower estimate is probably a bit pessimistic, but you have to take current advertised values with a pinch of salt.

I totally agree that the appropriate forum/platform such as Car and Classic or relevant auction house would be a sensible way to go. I sold my 360 GLS within a month via a free advert on the Car & Classic website which generated a few genuine enquiries.

thanks for all the posts about the 345. Ill probably get Mathewsons to value, and sell it. they are only about 60 mile away. It would be a good day out.

I think Matthewsons would be a good route. Classic auctions are probably the best environment for getting top money for clean examples, nowadays.

This was a lower mileage example (although 60k still counts as 'low' in my book!), but they sold a 340 for over £5,000 recently...so you might yet be in for a pleasant surprise!

cheers

James

Hi, is the car still for sale? If it is would you be able to send me some more photos especially of the interior?

Thanks

Steven
