Broken valve adjuster nut
I was adjusting the valves on my 122 (B18D engine) and, finishing up, I over-
tightened the nut on the 7th valve and snapped it off. I see that the adjuster is threaded as it goes into the rocker arm, but the adjustment will probably not hold now. I closed everything up and started the car. Runs fine. For now. I see that IPD has a part that fits on top of the push rod and interfaces with the rocker arm. Is that all I need to do: just buy that part and put it on? How does it attach to the pushrod, does anyone know. Thanks very much. |

You will have to remove the rocker shaft, as the adjuster screws in from the bottom. The ball end of the adjuster simply sits in the cupped top of the pushrod. Carefully loosen all of the retaining bolts, securing the rocker shaft.Undo each 1 by the same amount, a bit at a time, as some of the valves will be open, and under spring tension.
Screw the replacement threaded adjuster into the rocker shaft. When refitting the shaft ,ensure all the ball ended adjusters are sitting in the cups of the pushrods.Fit and tighten the bolts 1 turn each, pulling the shaft down squarely to the cylinder head.Adjust the tappet/valve clearance. Job done. |

The adjusters are very brittle so breaking them by over tightening the nut is easy to do. Nuts just have to be snug tight, only use a SHORT spanner to tighten while holding the adjuster with a well fitting screwdriver. Easy to break, but easy to fix if you have a couple of spares handy.

Thanks, guys.
Thanks very much, Derek and 133. I feel a little dumb but a little better
about it. And yeah, I was afraid I'd have to lift the rocker assembly; not the job, just the fear of breaking anything else. Onward and upward. |

Don't tighten the rocker gear holding down bolts too hard either, they are easy to break too. Think spark plugs (25-29ft/lbs.)

Pretty Easy Fix
Paul Dillon (volvo 165) suggested that it might be easier to compress the spring between #6 and #7 (quite a space there) and, after getting #7 to the open position, sliding the rocker arm into that space, taking the old adjuster screw out and popping in the new one. It worked like a charm, and saved me from
having to remove that whole assembly with the threat of more snapped off bolt heads and the like. I'm not sure, however, that a guy could do it on #1 or #8, neither of which would have the extra room. Thanks for all the suggestions, you guys. |
