Question V60 D4 VEA Reduced Engine Performace

Hi All

I have been getting a intermittent fault with my 2014 (MY 2015) V60 D4 VEA 74k.

The fault is "Reduced Engine Performance", performance seems normal and it would reset after the engine had been stopped for a few hours. Over the last week I have also now been getting the engine management light come on. I have code read with a ODBII reader and the only error code is P00BC (MAF low air flow). when i look at the data it shows the MAF is working normally (39g 2000rpm, 63g 3500rpm). However when the fault happens the EGR is reading EGR Duty 0%, EGR error 99%. When the error is not present is reads normal (EGR duty 38%, EGR error 0%).

Do you think its an EGR valve issue? or will the MAF cause the EGR to close? I have just purchased a used MAF and waiting for delivery.

Car has full Volvo service history and was only severed December 2018

Oil level shows as normal, cars has done less then 3000 miles since last service (completed at Volvo East London)

I actually drove around 500 miles last weekend without any error, now i get it every time the engine gets to running temperature.

I also think my fuel economy has reduced since i started getting the error and after Volvo services and updated the software. I used to get about a combined 48mpg, now I get about 40mpg. On my long drive without error (steady 70mph ) I averaged 54 mpg.

I think everything points to the EGR but has I have not got error code and am wondering if Volvo would not change the EGR as I understand the EGR was as big issue for my D4 MY 2015 but they only replace if the error occurs.

I'd say it's the EGR valve failing to properly close. The higher than expected EGR flow will then displace fresh air and so the MAF will be lower than expected.

Last week my EGR valve stuck open to the extent that the car became undriveable (had to be recovered to a Volvo dealer where the valve plus the EGR cooler were replaced).

While waiting for the recovery vehicle I read the stored codes using my cheap OBD2 scanner... P2413, P00be, P00bf and P2262.

Thanks for the reply.

That makes complete sense. I am almost convicted it's the EGR. Just note sure why the only error is low air flow, was hoping this also see EGR codes.

Did Volvo replace free of charge or did you pay.

My new MAF arrives today, gonna try but not very hopeful. Will have to contact Volvo after to get it booked in.

Because my car is (just) over 4 years old I only got a 50% goodwill contribution from Volvo. During replacement my EGR cooler was discovered to be partially blocked and also needed replacement, but this was covered 100% by Volvo. Cost me £337 total, including the initial diagnosis.

EGR problems on these VEA engines are horribly common. piotrek's link to the massive dedicated thread on this subject with many reports of issues is definitely worth a read... https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=221555

These readings look very similar to the problem I am now suffering. How did it get resolved?

Thanks, Gavin

Hi

I am in the same boat please let us know what you found out and how have you resolved the issue. On a side note the mercedes diesels of the newer generation when you replace the MAF you need to do adaptations on the ecu to let it know you have a new one installed and it will adapt to it otherwise it does the same thing you get maf error codes even when you replaced with a brand new part. The dealer here i sent this to for some help is turning out to be clueless on this problem
